This medication is an antibiotic that is used to treat or prevent various types of bacterial infections. The U.S. FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.
However, yellow phlegm does not always mean that an infection is present, according to the NIH, although it was thought to be true for many, many years. It has been discovered in more modern times that it may just mean your body is fighting off a cold, or other issue. Thus, you should not take an antibiotic, unless your doctor confirms the presence of an infection.
