Elderly people can be much more sensitive to the effects of the medication, which could cause dangerously low blood sugar levels. In many cases, doctors will have them stop using these types of medications and switch to something such as insulin, so they can monitor their blood sugar and make easier dosage adjustments, as needed.
Additionally, elderly people can be more susceptible to renal damage and failure, while taking oral antidiabetic medications.
