To answer your question, yes, Methadone is considered to be a synthetic (man-made) narcotic; which is often used to treat addiction to other narcotics as well as relieve severe pain.
Regarding your pill imprint "14 45 M", is it possible that you may have read that upside down? Only asking because the correct marking for this particular white pill is listed as "M 57 71" It is manufactured by Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals and has a National Drug Code of 00406-5771.
