Shallow breathing can be a side effect of most anesthetics and sedatives, as listed by the FDA. There's a chance that you were just experiencing the effects of the medications that were used.
Were you being monitored by the surgical staff? If so, they'd have known if there was any problem, or if you were in any danger.
