The NIH lists Percocet as containing Oxycodone with Acetaminophen, while Vicodin contains Hydrocodone with Acetaminophen.
So yes, they treat the same conditions, but are different medication formulations. Not every medication works for everyone that tries it, so there are usually several available in any given treatment category, thus your doctor can try a different one, if you don't respond to the first you try.
The FDA classifies these as narcotic analgesics, so they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.
