What Do I Do This Week? And Has My Extra Bleeding Been Normal?

This is my first time taking birth control. My doctor gave this kind to me just to start with then told me to switch to sprintec the next month. I started the pack the first sunday after getting my period as my doctor instructed, and I just finished week 3. I do not know if i should take these last seven pills or just switch to sprintec tomorrow? I am also worried about taking the last two brown pills next weekend because my boyfriend is coming down to georgia from new jersey for valentines day weekend and i realllllllllllllly don't want to get my period! Also these past three weeks I have been bleeding quite a bit even after finishing my period and it has been brown and quite heavy. is this normal?

Hi Lexi,

Are the last 7 pills your placebo/sugar pills (the ones you take the week of your period)? If so, I've read that it isn't harmful to skip those pills. If you do skip them and go straight to the Sprintec, that could possibly cause your body to skip the menstrual cycle (not have a period). However, you might still deal with occasional "surprise" spotting. Either way you should be safe, as long as you don't skip any of your active pills (the ones that contain the hormones) because that could put you at risk for pregnancy.

I think the reason for prolonged bleeding might just be your body getting used to the birth control. I know this doesn't sound pleasant, but from what I've read, the reason why the blood is brown is because it's the old blood that your body is still trying to flush out. I'd give it another week or so and if it doesn't go away or is becoming unbearable, just give your doctor a call.
