A dental abscess is caused by a bacterial infection, which has usually developed due to bacteria getting into the root of the tooth from a deep dental cary, or other exposure of the roots.
In most cases, it must be treated with an antibiotic, then the underlying cause rectified, by the performance of a root canal and filling of the tooth with a cap, or a full extraction.
Treating of the pain, or just taking an antibiotic will not solve the problem and is something I always try to warn people about. If you don't see a dentist to have the underlying issue correct, the infection will keep returning.
Signs of an abscess, according to the NIH, may possibly include swelling, puss, pain and sensitivity to heat and cold
