UpdatedI am a 26 year old female and have been on cilift since i was about 17 years old, my doctor assures me that it is toatlly safe to carry on for long periods of time, he also says its even safe for pregnant woman.
So my question is, could i be putting on weight from the cilift back when i was about 18 i was super skinny VERY skinny 47kgs and 1,66m i put on a bit of weight and was very happy at the age of 21 being 57kgs but since then it just seem to be coming and coming, gradually, i am now 1,69m and 66kgs i have not changed my lifestyle since i was 21 i eat well and exercise (which i never did when i was 18-21) ive now started eating ever BETTER and gyming more but the weight still keeps coming?
PLEASE HELP!! im getting more depressed over my weight then anything else! i am only on 20mg once a day, another one of my friends lost weight on cilift?? whats going on! pleae help

I am 25 years old and have been taking Cilift 20mg once a day. Ever since i have been taking Cilift, I have been gaining weight fast, and even though i am on a low fat eating plan and excersice regularly, the weight is not coming off - quite the opposite! I have been on it for 5 months now and I am seriously consider going off the medication as it costs more money to buy clothes and depresses me even more that i am getting this big! But what i do know is that most anti-depressants make you pick up weight - is there no other alterior method to use to loose the weight?
I have been using Cilift for years now. And I have gained 20 kg! and I have always been very skinny. I have decided to go off the medication cold turky- the weight gain makes me feel terrible and even more depressed. I am adamant to go through the horrible withdrawel symptoms. Why do the doctors not tell us all of this BEFORE we become so dependant on the medication???? I will try 5HTP if I feel depressed again,BUT NO MORE! Ihope the withdrawel symptoms won't last too long, because I can hardly function at the moment.
I'm reading this forum becasue I am also battling the weight issue since being on Cilift and I am not the only one my partner is also on it and he has also gained weight and so have 2 friends of mine so the fact that doctors say it is unlikely you will gain weight does not sit comfortably with me as it seems that it is more common than they give it credit for like you we also follow a healthy eating plan and have changed nothing in terms of the foods we ate when we were skinny to now and as you say I feel more depressed now as I am fatter than I have ever been in my life even fatter than when I was pregnant and that is just demoralising however I do know that I need to find an alternative to the medication as I am really unbalanced off it and a nightmare to live with if I don't take something to control the mood swings and depression. If any of you have made the switch to anything else and found it to be more satisfactory please post your reply
Hi
My dr warned me about getting dependant on cilift and said that I shouldn't use if for longer than 6 months.
Jane, the wtihdrawals from this class of medication can last for a month or so, however, if you were just using it as prescribed, they should not be extremely severe or dangerous.
On thing that you do need to watch our for though, since this is an antidepressant that affects chemicals in your brain is a rebound effect that causes worsening depression and suicidal thoughts.
This can be very dangerous for some people, which is why it is usually recommended that they be stopped on a slow taper, rather than cold turkey and it should always be done under a doctor's supervision.
Have you spoken to your doctor about stopping, yet?

Both my sister and I found that being on Cilift increased our appetites and therefore we ate more. You have to manage the intake of food when on Cilift to maintain your weight in my opinion. Its not easy!
Anti depressants, especially SSRI's, can interfere with leptin which impacts on weight gain or loss. The insert states that it is a common side effect. I have also gained while taking it for the last 14 months. I do aquarobics, eat a balanced, healthy, low fat diet and avoid junk as much as possible. However I am a nicer, calmer, happier person on the medication, and the circumstances that caused me to take it have not changed, so I will stay on it. I also have more energy so I have increased my classes to 4 x a week, and today I am starting to walk on the beach as well. I am also trying Solal's Irvingia, CLA & Chromium special (R399 for all 3) to see if it can assist. Please don't let the weight gain make you stop your meds. Ask for a different one, join a Group like Weigh Less or Weight Watchers, or see a nutritionist, join a gym, use a personal trainer, or do the Shape 10km in 12 weeks challenge (fantastic magazine & website) so you have a win/win situation where you are not depressed and you feel fit , strong, empowered, look toned, have great posture even if you are a dress size or two bigger. Also don't only weigh, use a tape measure - often you lose cms as you gain muscle and burn fat. Good luck!
I am also on Cilift for the past 3 months and has seen considerable weight gain...but...I'd rather be overweight, than depressed all the time...:)
Cilift is an antidepressant containing the active ingredient Citalopram.
That said, it is hard to say what might be causing your weight gain. Sometimes it is just normal as you age, it could be another health issue or there is a small chance it could be the medication.
The reason I say a small chance is because while these medications do cause weight gain for some people, it is usually only a small amount and does not keep continuing.
Have you spoken to your doctor about this issue?

I have been on Cilift for 3 months now and i am literally gaining weight by the day. i eat a very healthy balanced diet, do mild excercise and have never ever struggled with my weight (i am 31 yrs old). I am also considering going off it as every doctor says Cilift does not make you gain weight, which i do not believe as since taking this medication my weight is increasing fast.
I am using Cilif 40mg for 3 months now and i start gaining weight i am exercising every day for 30min and have a healthy dieet but i am still picking up weigh. I also do not feel find the last few days, i feel depress and sad and just want to sleep and be alone why am i feeling like this???? i dont have stress at the moment my life is good
I am on cilift for a month and 10 days and I also find I am so hungry all the time and I only want to eat meat, cheese and bread - I don't even like meat and cheese normally and nor do I eat margarine or butter but now rama is my best friend. This is also making me unhappy because these items make me pick up weight at rapid rate and I have no idea how to control my appetite!
My Dr has put me on Cilift 20mg once a day, I am on day 2, can someone please tell me how long it takes before you feel different?
I went through a terrible depression after my divorce 2 years ago (6 years from time of my ex's affair with my best friend). My divorce caused me to lose a huge amount of weight and once I was put on AI's the weight began to come on thick and furiously. I initially took Lorien but it affected me negatively so I changed onto Cilift. The weight has just kept coming on depsite doing gym classes 3 times a week and sticking to a strict eating plan. I've decided to go off the Cilift and have been taking 5HTP & St. John's wart as well as a strong Vitamin B to help. I actually don't feel too depressed but I haven't lost 1 kg! This is freaking me out!!!!! I don't agree with the Doctors who suggest you don't put on weight when taking these meds. It just doesn't make sense. My new husband has also been on Cilift for a year and he too has put on alot of weight and even has 'moobs' now as a result of it. We're both so fed up.
I have been on antidepressants all my life. Using Cilift for 8 yrs. I picked up weight gradually over the last few yrs, weighing more now than when - was pregnant. I can't exercise as I wear a full prostesis so my weight is just piling up. I did go see a nutritionist\dietician ysesterday.
Re: Verwon (# 5)
i have taken cilift for 14 years and have not gained weight at all, however, trying to wean myself of the medication has proven a nightmare. don't let them tell you it is easy to come off the pills, because it is not.
I would quit taking the stuff myself. Maybe try another anti-depressant. You could also have your thyroid checked. Check with your Doctor.
i so have the same problem, i am 32 and i hardly eat as much and the weight is just piling on and i am now on it since last year July, so i am now weaning myself off it completely, my DR has prescribed Lorien but i am going to try go off completely
