Virginia Pain Management

I have spinal stenosis, arthritis and 2 herniated discs for which I have had surgery. My current pain med doc won't go any higher then 50mgs of tramadol 3 times a day and that is it. Nothing else prescribed. He says nothing else will help and just go have surgery. I am not looking to take 10 mg of MS or anything. I just need something to help when the pain gets too bad several times a week. The tramadol does not work anymore. Does anyone know of a place in Hampton Roads VA that will help?

Re: ISE (# 2)
Wish I could tolerate marijuana in any form. The 2 times I actually inhaled it & few times when exposed to only smoke fumes around friends I got terribly ill, 2 of those times ended up in hospital ER! As it turns out I’m obviously highly allergic to THC, the ingredient. So, in essence med MJ or in any form is out of the question for me. I’m happy for all who can tollerate it & that it helps so many suffering in pain.
My advice to you is to, unfortunately as it’s a hassle, begin at Step 1, go to your primary doctor & request a referral to an orthopedic dr specializing in spinal injuries; you will probably get a new MRI order from him & will also have to have your older results/records from 1st surgery; results will most likely be, based on your symptoms u describe, he will refer u to a neurologist &/or neurosurgeon, however as u r going thru this search for an updated diagnosis from failed results of 1st surgery & where to go from there, he’ll prescribe something stronger temporalily &/or will refer (prescribe) you to a Pain Mgmt Specialist.
Obviously I’m thinking you are experiencing the following (I know cuz I live w/it after 4 lumbar surgeries)...
Scar tissue growth; ie; arachnoiditis where scar tissue from surgery grows around your spine hitting nerve endings; the pain even worse than before u had the surgery. When a disc is removed dr’s rely on scar tissue to form a “natural disc replacement,” what they don’t tell u is the scar tissue in most cases, some more than others, continues to form/grow outside of the spinal canal, aka, like “spider legs!” attacking your nerve endings.
I could go on & on. My heart breaks for you. But in summary, you must start all over again. A lot tougher now that chronic pain patients like us have been thrown “under the bus!” due to opioid “crisis.” We must continue to be heard & fight for our rights. Our lives, like “overnight” have been turned upside down & barely able to function.
The National Pain Report is a great tool & hope for us. Not sure of the exact link but google it so you can subscribe & join in on their amazing efforts on our behalf.
God bless you & us all dear one.

I have your health ailments and A LOT more. This past Dec 2018, I made the choice after long consideration (and being on pain meds for A LONG time) it is time to try to get off not only pain meds but as many other meds that I can. Found a Dr that was willing to help me wean off my meds and implement Medical Marijuana. It has only been a few months but I eliminated Morphine Sulfate ER twice a day [30 mgs] and my Diluadid has been half weaned off or more 16 mgs a day to approx 4-6 on average. There are days where I do need the 16mgs a day. Due to weather or flare ups. Medical Marijuana does wonders for chronic pain. The other thing to take away with Medical Marijuana doesn't have to be smoked. It is available in edibles, capsules, topicals and another thing there is CBD, which has ZERO psychotropic effects. One more thing, NO ONE has OD'd on Marijuana.
So I am off ONE opioid completely the other roughly half off. I am off my Diazepam [Benzodiazepines], and I haven't taken my Belsomra [Sedative-hypnotics] on a nightly basis since the law changed with opioids. My Dr still had it filled but told me that if my sleep is interrupted for 5 nights [I used to get frequent sleep deprived - I do have a recent diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and wear a CPAP because of it. Hwvr, I suffer from seasonal allergies and you can not wear a CPAP and sneeze into it. So there are many sleepless nights. So after Night 5 he/she told me to take Belsomra so I might have 2 pills a month vs 30. My Dr thinks by the end of the year I will be off my pain med by the end of the year. She also thinks in a couple months I can start weaning off Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine), Dolobid (Diflusinal) but need on a PRN basis. It might never be off my list since I suffer from inflammation and we haven't gotten my 10 pound overnight weight gain under control. If I push myself too hard and do too much in a day it causes inflammation. Auto-immune diseases such as Fibromyalgia, myofascial pain is unpredictable.
Oh and So far NO weight gain from MMJ for me. If anything I have gone down a dress size. There are different strains -ones that do not cause weight gain. Think more people can switch to MMJ. There are sooo many benefits. AND if you do your research you can find that MMJ vs. other pain medications have so many Pros vs. Cons. Having family members tell me there is a HUGE positive difference from MMJ and they think I am more alert and more fun to be around. I wonder why more people aren't looking to switch if they can.
I do not know of a place there. However, if you are willing to drive to Richmond which is seventy miles away, I know a doctor who will treat you with proper medication (better than tramadol and less than MS).
