Vicodin Usage With Multiple Injuries
UpdatedThis is going to sound a little crazy. I am a retired physical therapist. At 59 years old i have been very active in sports from a young age. Needless to say I have treated just about every injury that can occur in the human body over the years. Most required pain meds to endure p.t. I have always been interested in mma, so i decided to move to las vegas and train at the major gyms there. BAD mistake! After 4 years of training I was busted up. osteoarthritis and degeneration took place on a whole new level. I started taking vicodin for my shoulder, then my hip, and now for both knees. I don't even want to mention my spine. Vicodin was a huge blessing in the beginning, especially in combo with hrt. It allowed me to fight and train. It gave me energy and endurance (not typical). I have had a THR, cortisone, supartz inj's., and attempted one of the newer D.O. recommended genicular nerve radio frequency ablation treatments without success. This genicular nerve is the pain nerve for the knee and can drastically reduce pain for 6 months and can be repeated several times, if successful. Some of you may do well mentioning this to your M.D. So, as you can see, I'm in it for the long haul. I will need 3 surgeries in the future. The strange thing is is that I have dealt with the downside of this medication for awhile and am only taking one 10/325 a day. I was up to 4 and continuing to train. My main complaint about vicodin withdrawal are nausea, restless leg syndrome, and extreme agitation. I mean I can't go out of the house as I am afraid of what I will act negatively too. Has anybody out there really become so agitated that you're mean? I have been off hrt for 4 months, so its not testosterone producing these effects. I am kind of gun-shy to drop the last vic as I am afraid of the consequences.

Hello, Michael! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about what you're dealing with.
And yes, I have experienced that. Years ago, I went off high doses of Morphine and Oxycodone cold turkey, after being on them for pain management for about 7 years. I have to admit that I turned into a super crabby b**ch!
The only way I know of to prevent it is by doing a very slow taper. Since these aren't time released, you can cut them to gradually lower how much you are taking, as long as your doctor approves.
The FDA classifies this medication as being a narcotic analgesic and other withdrawal effects may include nausea, fever, chills, rebound pain and diarrhea.
Does anyone else have any suggestions that may help?
Thank you Verwon for your reply. I'm going to cut a 10/325 and just take mornings and see how I feel. It seems that the testosterone level has dropped as I am less irritable. It is time to go for it. If not I can just hang at the same level another week and try again.
