Vicodin 10 325 (Top voted first)
UpdatedI Took my prescription to a pharmacy to be filled and they said they couldn't fill it because that strength 10 325 doesn't exist anymore with Vicodin. They said the doctor should've made the prescription out for either 10/300 or Norco 10/325. I went to another chain pharmacy and they said there was no problem at all and they filled the prescription and said the law allowed them to generically fill the prescription with either Norco 10/325 or Vicodin 10/300 which ever they had available as long as it wasn't over 10/325. Who is right?

Hello, Vann! How are you?
Technically, both are right. The pharmacy has the right to refuse, since it was written like that, but they don't have to, because as the other pharmacy said, they can substitute. Thus, it would be up to the policy of the individual pharmacy that you went to in order to get it filled.
The FDA classifies this medication as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Is there anything else I can help with?
I'm getting conflicting results here. I called the DEA trying to get an answer and they hemmed and hawed and couldn't quote me law but said the pharmacy could NOT fill the Rx for other than what was written (Vicodin 10-325) but, since that doesn't exist they cannot just opt to fill it as Vicodin 10-300 because "they know that's what the doctor really meant". Yet you say they can. On the other hand they can't quote me where they can't and two pharmisists said they could, one other said it was against the law! Who's right?
They can't change the dose, without the doctors permission, but they can provide you with a generic in the prescribed dosage.
There is no name brand Vicodin in that dosage, anymore, but they can provide you with a generic in that dosage if they have it in stock.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
And there's the rub, there is no generic for Vicodin, but Hydrocodone 10-325 which is exactly the same thing can't be dispensed, according to one pharmacist, because the Rx would have to say Hydrocodone! And still, NO ONE can show me either way written proof! What a seeming Catch 22.
That's very unusual, because usually, they just go with the generic automatically.
For instance, if your doctor had written it for Norco, unless you have to have the name brand, they'd give you the generic Hydrocodone/APAP.
To be quite honest, this whole thing isn't making any sense to me.
What I'd suggest, in order to avoid this in the future, is asking your doctor to write it that way, using the generic names. This would avoid that issue.
On the rx there is place that says generic substitutions allowed or dispense as written. It is states, Dispense As Written, the pharmacist must give you the med it is written for exactly. If it states Substitutions Allowed, the pharmacist can substitute a generic for a brand or a brand for a generic. Vicodin, Norco and Lortab all have Hydrocodone and Acetaminphen in the same amounts.
What you suggest is exactly what I'm going to do. I've had this same Dr. writing the same Rx for 7 years and only now has there been a problem. What a royal and confusing mess for me!
