Verify Drug Identifier Inscribed In Pill
UpdatedThe atenolol med I am taking is manufactured by Ranbaxy and has the letters and number inscribed on the pill RE 20. I just started taking and am getting severe adverse reactions. Previously was taking atenolol manufactured by Geneva/Sandoz and did not have any reactions for the last eight years. I pharmacy says they are OK'd by the FDA. Cost savings. The drug has enlarged my veins near my wrists and have felt anxious as well as stomach swelling after eating meals. How can I verify that the drug has the prescribed chemical makeup that should be in it? I think that it is another drup and giving me side effects.

I cannot find this listed in the databases to verify what it is, however, I can tell you that just because something does contain the same active ingredients and is an approved generic, it doesn't mean it is identical.
First of all, the active ingredient in generic medications is allowed to differ in dosage, by as much as plus or minus 20%, so you could be getting a stronger or weaker dosage than you were in the other one you were taking.
In addition to this, the active ingredient DOES NOT have to be identical to the name brand or any of the other generics, the company only has to prove to the FDA that it is bio-equivelent and works in the body in the same way that the original active ingredient did.
Lastly, the inactive ingredients do not have to be the same at all, and they do affect some people.
Interesting. My pharmacy switched manufacturers of my Atenolol 25 mg. to Ranbaxy P. Prior to this, my blood pressure and heart rate was under control. Since the switch, my b/p and heart rate are as though I am taking no medication. My doctor has increased dosage to 2 X day, but still high. Because of increase in dosage, my insurance has gone up $200 a month. Anyone else having similar experience?
On the Ranbaxy generic Atenolol I also started having high blood pressure and REALLY bad heart palpitations or PVCs that occurred every second or third beat ALL night long. My pharmacy used to buy the generic Atenolol from Teva USA but when they went to the Ranbaxy Atenolol (Made in India) two years ago the Atenolol caused all kinds of bad effects, eventhough I have been taking Atenolol for over 10 years. I asked the pharmacy to give me the name brand Tenormin and I feel like a new man. I checked the FDA website and in 2008 they issued Ranbaxy a warning letter for 30 generics for poor quality and falsifying test data, including Atenolol. I am looking for a class action lawsuit I can take part in. My cardiologist was baffled since all the heart tests were OK. I go back in two weeks for a checkup and will let him know that I solved the problem. Coincidentally he is from India where Ranbaxy is located. This drug is junk and I hope to send the Ranbaxy Atenolol to the FDA to be tested.
