Unwanted Weight Gain

I took 52 mgs of cyproheptadine in one dose. I didn't know it caused weight gain. I don't want to gain weight just wanted to sleep. If I stop now will I still gain the unwanted weight? And when will it leave my body? ThanKs
ps I only took it this once but I took a super high dose, when will it leave my body.

Hi gabby,

From what I've researched, weight gain is in fact listed as a "possible" side effect of Cyproheptadine; but this doesn't mean it happens to everyone who takes it...which is probably why we aren't really concerned about these things until they actually begin to manifest. Odds are though, that these types of side effects usually tend to subside after you stop taking what's causing it to begin with.

According to the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, Cyproheptadine has a half life of 8.6 hours when taken orally. This means that 8.6 hours after you took your 52mg dose, only an estimated 26mgs remain active. Then every subsequent 8.6hrs, half of that remaining half (13mg) is still active, and so forth (6.5mg, 3.25mg, 1.625mg..etc) until it's completely excreted from your body. I would estimate this to take 2-3 days to leave your body based on this information alone. However due to other individual factors, such as metabolism, age, weight, etc...this is only speculative.
