Unusual Side Effects Of Methylin As A Generic For
UpdatedI have just been given Methylin as a generic for Ritalin. I have taken other generic forms of Ritalin. All others have been called Methylphenidate and have all responded as anticipated. Methylin has been very different. It has made me sleepy, not alert at all and most importantly has significantly lowered my blood pressure while raising my pulse. My last dosage lowered my bp to 63/46, pulse 96. I stopped the medication.
Are there any others with similar effects while taking this medication?

Tell your doctor and pharmacist that this generic doesn't work for you. There is no way that they can force you to take a generic that doesn't work I am not a doctor but all I see is it is the same drug just generic. Different brand. I may be wrong, but ask, I can't see you taking something that won't work. Good luck, keep us informed

I have learned that generic drugs are not simply an exact replica of the original drug. The base chemical (active ingredient) is the same, but it can be in different amounts (rarely) and the chemical compounds that are inactive in the drug can vary widely.
A blood pressure of 63/46 is dangerously low and when experiencing such readings, along with an elevated pulse rate, emergency medical attention should be sought immediately. Those are dangerous numbers, and might not be solely due to the medication change.
Methylin, however, is not a generic, it is a name brand. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, anorexia, insomnia, and nervousness.
As to what Andy stated, he is referring to the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, which allows generics to differ, in the amount of the active ingredient, by as much as plus or minus 20%. The FDA considers that to be an acceptable therapeutic window, and most people never notice a difference, because it actually adds up to minuscule amounts. Yes, the inactive ingredients can vary widely, not only from one manufacturer to another, but also from one production facility for the same manufacturer to another.
Is there anything I can help with?
