My dog had a tumor and was given this already filled by the vet. Good luck it's heartbreaking to see them suffer

Costco was able to supply a generic white tablet of hydrocodone, and it does not seem to be as effective as the Tussigon Blue tablet. I will get the next months supply from Walmart ( Tussigon ) and see if any difference.
Also found out most Vets dont want to mess with the new DEA paperwork requirements for COPD Rx a Drug like this. I was lucky as I went to a Respiratory specialist which had taken the trouble to become licensed to prescribe this drug. You may have to find such a specialty in your area also if your dog has the dry cough of COPD.

Got the next months 60 tab supply from Costco - $80 -- a generic Hydrocodone 5mg - CVS wouldn't order for me -- think it was because of it being a narcotic.

I have a 15lb dog and give 1/2 tablet 3 times a day -- it really helps -- he doesn't cough at all when given and after 5-7 hours starts coughing again -- reminds me it's time for another dose.

Got it from Wal-Mart. They had to order it and it took 2 days -- but it is 5mg tablet. cost about $100 for 60 tabs. I am going to try CVS to see if any cheaper the next time. I understand COSTCO can get 60 Tabs for $86 , but havent tried yet ...

I'm surprised you were able to obtain Tussigon, as it's my understanding that it is no longer manufactured. Was what you got in a tablet form? I was able to get liquid tussigon through a compounding pharmacy in AZ.....and of course, by RX only, from my vet.....

We had been taking our dog to the Vet for a cough for 3 months -- finally he said we may want to consult a Vet respiratory specialists. $1500 later the Specialist prescribes Tussigon and it has worked wonders. Turns out our Vet did not have the government licence to prescribe the narcotic for COPD for canines. So, it costs us $1500 to get to a Vet with the proper licencing and knowledge of COPD (which I am finding out is common).

K....thanks for the info on Walgreens.......since my post in March 2015, my baby Hugo has had a second very bad attack of his collapsing trachea. My vet gave me a new RX for Hydrocodone, but I wasn't able to find it anywhere within a 75 mile radius (including Walgreens) ....after much investigation my local pharmacist found that this medication is no longer being made by the manufacturer.....it is being reformulated as a ER medication in 10 mg.....but has an additivie (ie, tylenol, ibuprophen) that is a no-no for dogs. The good news? my vet has asked a compounding pharmacy to make this for us......and I should have it within a week. Our weather has been hot & humid.....not good conditions for a collapsing trachea......so I'm doing my best to keep Hugo calm and cool......thanks for your reply......and caring.

Don't let the vet make euthanasia decision for you. He can make suggestions and you can go home to decide ( then don't go back, if you don't want to)

Try pill pockets. My dog wouldnt take it and then I tried these. They are at Petsmarts.

The tussigon is now classified as a narcotic and the vets have to have a certain kind of prescription pad to order it. My vet did it for me! He is awesome!!

CherLou,

I've read several posts and they indicate walgreens has a prescription pet program. You might also consider trying web-based pet med sites. Also hycodan is hydrocodone, like for people. see if the people prescription is cheaper. Read the other posts on this thread, theres lots of good info.

a few weeks ago I made an emergency trip to a vet 75 miles away and my dog was diagnosed with a collapsing trachea.....he had a choking cough so bad I thought he was maybe dying and I was so happy that was not the case that when I used a credit card to pay the astronomical bill and didn't notice that the 20-5mg Tussigon tablets for him cost $69.30. Today I asked for a refill and found the cost to be $40.08 from my local pharmacy for the same 20 pills. Regardless of the savings, I'm having difficulty budgeting for this monthly amount on my social security benefits. Does anyone know of an alternative for this medication that I can find for a lower cost? What about Ultram(tramadol)? My 13 yr old chi is also on prednisone for this condition......I've always heard that prednisone is not good for dogs, or even people. Does anyone know of an alternative for prednisone? Any help will be greatly appreciate.

I got 20 5 mg tabs at my vet yesterday for my Pom. The cost was $60.60. This seems extremely high. I only give my Pom 1/4 of the pill only when she starts coughing and can't seem to quit. I only use when necessary. My Pom is almost 15 yrs. in June.

My vet keeps advising me there is nothing alternate at this time and the only thing I can use is Robitussin DM. I have done this for three weeks now and he just keeps getting worse. So is there really not an alternative or do Vets not want to fool with it because of costs?

Hi my pharmacy has the medication - I also have a toy poodle with a collapsing trachea and without this medicine I'd have to put her to sleep. I'm in New York City. The Pharmacy's name is Pasteur Pharmacy - Tel: 212-683-3838. You do need a prescription from your vet. Perhaps they can mail it to you if you're out of state.

Yes these people are a joke unless you live in PA. They did state there were not aware that tussigon had been discontinued. I find this strange.

Our vet prescribred a steroid with the hydrocodone and it helped more than just the hydrocodone on its own, but our dog has heart and lung issues and has allergies.
