Tramadol is actually classified as a non-narcotic, centrally active analgesic.

There have been questions raised over its status and the classification has been changed, several times. This is due to the fact that it is derived from a narcotic.

When it was created, those developing it tried to create a medication that would be as effective for pain as a narcotic, but without the side effects and addicting properties.

However, they later found out that this did not work. What they actually created is something that isn't as effective and still caused all the other problems.
