hi. i hope someone can help me with this question. im 29 years old and 4 years ago i started taking tramodal for leg pain. about 6 months ago i took it as usual and i noticed it didnt have any of the effects it used to have on my mood. before then it would always lift it. i kept taking it bcause i was very addicted. after a few days i started getting very nauseas like i was sea sick when i took it. then next thing i know i would cry for no reason. ive never had problems with deppression my whole life. ive always been very happy and loved life. well soon after i was still taking it and when i wd get off work n go home all i could do was pace around and cry. i felt so guilty for no reason.things i used to feel good about i no longer did. seemed like everything was unpleasant. so i decided to get off the tramadol thinkn it was causing it. i quit cold turket and went through about a week of terrible withdrawls. i couldnt wait till it was over so i could get my life back. that wasnt the case. as soon as the withdrawls were over i sunk into a very deep depression. i went to a doc and explained everything to him. he didnt have any answers for me. neither did my psyciatrist. he diagnosed me with major depressive disorder. i know that tramodal has ssri effects but can it really cause permanent mood disorders? i started taking antidepressants about a week after i quit the tramadol and none of them help at all. if i would just not take anything and let my brain readjust itself for awhile would i come out of it and be my happy confident self agian? by the way. my depression is not situational. im not down on myself i just feel extremely chemically imbalanced. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have also been on Tramadol for 12 years consecutively. Never a day without it. I noticed in the past year i felt physically addicted, If i went more than a few hours past my time for my pill my muscles would start twitching, but It took me til two weeks ago to finally realize something was wrong. I have been paranoid,Anxious,Caused marital problems ( thinking husband is cheating) he isn't.. Heart palpitations. Just before I quit I was noticing I freaked out once the meds hit my system. I have since quit I had my husband take it all and hide it. Now clean almost week and half.I feel so down, I have feel i ruined my marriage, little paranoid but nothing as it was. My muscles Burn, Twitch, Heart is freaking me out, as it speeds up and slows down, And my hands are always shaking. I am SO mad at my doctor as well, as I reported what was going on and he told me, There is no evidence or either Addiction or Paranoid thoughts. Looked at me like I lost my mind. I have had chronic pain for most of my life with Lyme disease, Arthritis, Fibro, Deng Disc, and multi other things. I must say though, besides the feeling my muscles want to rip out of my skin, my other pain is gone! Is there any hope being on this for so long that my mind will come back to me? I feel so lost, and feel discouraged from the medical professionals. Mostly scared that my mental state will never be the same..

well i have also have major depression and have had the worst tramadol addiciton that i have ever heard of in my life approx. 20 to 30 50mg pills a day for at least seven years and then cut way down to maybe 90 a month 3 a day and i dont have the nausiating feeling with the low doses. But with the really high doses i would actually throw up once in a while i beleive that i was so addicted i had built up a tollerance tha was crazy strong. i would gag when i took them because my body knew that i could not handel anymore, I would say it was a toxic level and i have had this happen with benzos also the point that i am trying to say is tha tramadol is a very under rated drug and the addicitiveness of it is number one on my list it is the only drug that i cannot completely let go of and my dr understands tha it is way better that i was. try to cut back to 3 to six a day and the icky feelings will go away. I Would just like to add that i also have self harm issues and being addicted to pharmacutical drugs for over half my life. i have been to treatment 5 times and stopped using coke crack meth LSD mushrooms EX weed benzos and all other pain killers but the tramadol always comes back and the others do not it has been 7 years without any street drugs but i cant kick this stupid tramadol habbit. Good luck and never give up and never surrender.

I am still a active user of drugs but do believe that they do effect everyone lives in the whole wide world and drugs also make the world go round. Good Luck

In response to tramadol withdrawal and mood disorders. First and most important never take cymbulta. Me and my husband were both put on it for nerve damage even though we were not depressed. The doctor told us it would help the pain and make us happier as a bonus. Well I went homicidal and he went suicidal. I did not succeed in killing him (thank god) only for him to kill himself two weeks later.
As for the best thing I have found to help my mood and withdrawal is suboxin. It is the best thing out there. I have not taken percoset or any other meds since Jan 1,2010 even though I do not have withdrawals any more I get a foggy head along with a depressed irritated feeling and as soon as I take my suboxin I feel great. If you google suboxin doctors in your state a list of all doctors will pop up good luck.

It is very hard to say how any medication and stopping one will affect any one individual. Everyone's body responds differently to such things.

Your mood problem may not even be related to the Tramadol at all. As kygirl stated, there are other factors that could be contributing.

This has to really be taken under consideration since you stopped the medication and are still having the same symptoms.

Have you tried seeing a different doctor?

I've taken Ultram for almost ten years and also have major depression with panic attacks. I've discontinued the drug cold turkey too. Being a nurse, I would like to make a suggestion to you. Have your vitamin D level check ASAP. If the level is below 20, this could be one reason why you're feeling as you do. Also, have your thyroid checked, as it will affect your moods. Good luck and I hope this may offer you some hope.

Sep. 12th....The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) increased its warning for the prescription drug tramadol which is used to treat chronic pain. Tramadol is found in Ultram (tramadol hydrochloride) and Ultracet (tramadol hydrochloride/acetaminophen) and can increase the risk for suicide in some patients. Ortho-McNeil-Janssen will be notifying medical professionals of the new warnings.

Medical professionals shouldn't prescribe tramadol to people that could become addicted or are already suicidal. In addition careful consideration should be made when prescribing to patients that are taking tranquilizers, antidepressants, drink alcohol in excess, or have emotional problems.
