Tooth, Abscess, Infection, Swollen, Mouth, Lips, Inner Cheek

I had puss leaking from the gums but the dentist did not drain it. He just extracted my bottom row wisdom tooth and gave me Amoxicillin 500 MG 4x. The tooth extraction was about $541, does that sound to high for one tooth? I used all the drug and it seemed to help but I relapsed.

My inner cheeks are swollen and it seems to be slightly swollen along my jawline. I had that before taking any prescription so it's not an allergic reaction. Also around my mouth feels a little swollen. What should I do next? The second time I went to the Dentist he didn't prescribe me anything and said the swelling was okay.

He never mentioned my inner cheek swelling even though you can't miss it. Should I try another dose of Amoxicillin or something else or maybe 2 antibiotics? I'm on the verge of going to see another Dentist because this one just doesn't seem to be doing much to help me. What do you think?

Dental prices can be quite expensive, depending on the dentist, and insurance. Getting dentures, without implants, cost way more than that, and if it weren't for a charity to help heart patients, I wouldn't have been able to get them.

As to the swelling in your mouth, that can happen after an extraction, but it always your right to get a second opinion, if you feel one is needed. I've had so many adventures over the years with bad teeth that I have to say I am happy to finally have them gone and have dentures. Yeah, they sometimes come loose, when I am eating, but it is a simpler matter to add more adhesive, which I will take any day, compared to being in pain. I know dentures aren't right for everyone, so I am not advocating for them, I am just saying that in some cases, they are the only remaining viable option.

How long have you been taking the antibiotic?

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, diarrhea. and non-allergic skin rash.

Thanks for getting back to me. This is the worst experience I've ever had in my life. I've been looking all over the internet for help but it's hard to come by. The dentist just took out the tooth with no implants and that was the cost I was quoted.

The thing is, the inner cheek swelling was there before the extraction. I've been only taken the Amoxicillin for only 1 week but I may have missed a few doses and drank a little alcohol the 6th day.

I'm not sure if the alcohol negated the effects. I only missed the doses when I slept. I wonder if I should take Amoxicillin again? I had zero side effects from it. The dentists seem timid to prescribe me antibiotics. I have an appointment to go on Tuesday, if they don't give or do something I'll just walk out the office. I can only hope this goes well.

Ask the dentist. Never start an antibiotic on your own. The amount of time you take it, the dose, and route are very important for treatment. You don't need to figure this out. If your swelling isn't more than before and if you are not having fevers I wouldn't worry too much. However, it doesn't hurt to just give them a call. As for the cost. Yes that seems outrageous! Are you having to pay this out of pocket? If you are I would seriously complain to the Dentist and to authorities if necessary. On average, with insurance a normal tooth extraction is around $100-$200. Dental costs purposely have no consistency and can vary wildly. If you are paying out of pocket a normal extraction fee should be around $80.0. Now, depending on what tooth was taken out and how difficult it was the price can go higher. If you were terribly infected from that tooth alone again it's up to the dentist to decide how much time and effort went in to taking it out and treating you. Usually all the teeth except for wisdom teeth, costs the same for extractions unless there are specific anomalies or complications particular to each tooth. It is priced per tooth. Good luck.
