To Many Percocets

My fiancé takes percocets for back and knee pain he has to have surgery but cant do it now. He is constantly at the hospital for pain and its driving me nuts. then when he gets his script he takes 5 to 7 5mg each and tries to tell me it wont hurt him. Im worried and I don't know what to do for him I see him going down hill and this addiction is taking over his life yet he is in denial. help please

Dear Tiffany, sounds like u r in a tough situation. I'm sorry 2 hear that. U c, the problem with people who abuse their meds r in denial most of the time. Or, they do know it and haven't hit rock bottom yet 2 admit it. Believe me, I went through it myself. Once I got sick and tired, I surrendered and got help. Have u trie 2 have a heart 2 heart talk with him? I know it's a very hard thing 2 deal with. My son is addicted 2 Oxy. I've begged him, pleaded with him and cried my eyes out . (Nothing! ). All I can do is pray 4 him. Let me know how u make out. GOOD LUCK !!!

Hello, Tiffany! How are you? I am very sorry about what you're going through. …and Cats68, thank you for your input, that's very valuable.

At the moment, the biggest danger from him taking that many at once is actually the Acetaminophen in the Percocet, because it can be fatally toxic, if too much is ingested in any 24 hour period and he may have already caused damage to his heart and liver.

He needs to get help. Does he have a PCP that he sees regularly? If so, perhaps filling them in would be the best thing to do. They can't discuss his medical condition with you, but you can call and tell them your concerns.

Does anyone else have any advice to add?

They won't discuss it with you or even take your call in most states due to HIPAA regulations.

You CAN write a letter to the doctor. You are delivering information. Their participation isn't required.

Be prepared for some drama at home.

Percocet withdrawal can leave some people violently angry.

Don't tell him you wrote the letter until he's 6 months clean and emotionally stable, with an NA sponsor firmly in place.

I'm sure treatment will be needed for addiction/pain management.

30 days is a good start.

Thanks for all your help I appreciate the fact that im not completely alone. He doesn't go to a pcp. He is constantly running from hospital to hospital and some of the er's are catching on and not giving him anything but most of them do. I have talked to him I even see a counselor myself and had him try to help him. he will yes us to death and continue down the same road. Im worried I just don't want to explain to my kids that there dad didn't care enough about himself to stay well for them.or god forbid he has damaged his liver or heart and passes at a young age I try and when I think he has no resources he finds someone to give him some. I may ust need to walk away. His mother just died of an overdose I thought that would straighten him out but it made him worse. well thanks everyone

you are right to be concerned for his wellbeing; this is a sign of tolerance as well as addictive behavior,I been there,,, if long term intake is the issue then he need to talk with his doctor n modify his activities and possibly use a self monitoring system, of your holding a key to a lockbox , it doesnt make him a bad person, it makes him a person to be talked WITH not at n if he potientally has a problem then try to work with him.
