Thrush In Mouth Will Not Subside
UpdatedSaw doc in April 2015, and was prescribed an oral liquid medication for thrush in mouth. Seemed to subside, but it came back about 5 days later. Doc prescribed pill for same thrush, which I finished. 1 week after finishing, thrush was back, so he gave me the oral liquid again, which I finished. 3 days later it was back, and he gave me the pills once more. I finished those, and started taking tea tree capsules. That has not worked. I started using the Oral B mouthwash with peroxide, which has worked a little for discomfort. I am really tired all the time, and I have horrible, painful sores and blisters in the roof of my mouth, and am at my wits end. I take pain meds for cervical spine pain, and even that does nothing for the discomfort. I wear dentures, when I can, and am very, very careful with how I clean them. I don't use them daily, since this hurts so much. I don't know where to turn. I had this when I was very young, back in the late 1950's, but don't remember how it was treated. I read that this is sometimes related to sexual contact, but I have not had any for more than 20 years.

Hello, Anna! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about how you're feeling.
Has your doctor actually cultured it to verify that it's yeast?
And no, sexual contact usually doesn't cause it. Most often, it's due to something killing off the good bacteria in your body, such as an antibiotic, so probiotics that help repopulate them may help. Yogurt that is made without sugar, but with natural cultures may also help yeast infections, as listed by the NIH.
I've also noticed that it can be caused by dentures, if they don't fit properly, since that can allow bacteria to build up in the mouth. Have you tried consulting your dentist? Along with cleaning the dentures, do you brush your mouth regularly? It is necessary to stimulate the blood flow to the gums.
Are you on any medications that you take regularly?
