The Question Should Be Is Oxycodone Better Than Morphine?
UpdatedMany questions here seem to be about comparing one opioid to another. Your questions need to be about either relief of not and that taking say Oxycodone 15mg is effectively treating pain. Pain from one to another is subjective at best. Morphine is engineered for lasting longer than Oxycodone IR, immediate release. Therefore at first Oxycodone works well but doesn't last, requiring another dose then morphine or Oxycontin may work better lasting through a period of time. Oxycodone really is a breakthrough pain medication. Treatment using Oxycodone for longterm pain treatment is tricky and may take months or years to get right. It took 3 years and 3 different pain management plans to find something that works fairly well. The other issue is insurance, wheres Oxycontin is a name brand tier 3 drug which you pay a higher price. With Medicare, I have to use Oxycodone vs. Oxycontin because of cost. So I have 5 pain treatments a day of a total of 75mg daily dose to maintain a living lifestyle, with full functionality meaning social interaction. This is my treatment plan that works for me and most likely won't work with anyone else. This is why whatever pain medication your on, you need to work with a pain management team to find the best solution pain management solution. It isn't just about dosage or type. If your taking medication when you begin to loose pain control, then it's already too late. What your pain management plan should do is maintain a living balance of not pain free but reduced pain. Control of pain is science and art, just popping meds and wanting high dosage isn't treatment, your hurting yourself. That's why the drugs were talking about here really has different physiological actions on the body. You job as is mine is to use these tools to balance what you consider pain vs. relief. I still have breakthrough pain meds for when pain gets away from me, as the only other treatment is the ER and hours of waiting, pain and aggravated times. Good luck
