The one with petrolatum in it was the salve, not the syrup, right?

The adirondack museum did a big research project on balsam, and they even made balsam salve from directions given by an old-timer. this museum is about 50 miles from Dr. Lee/s.

My mom, who lived in ME recently passed away and I found an old bottle of Lee's Save the Baby in her medicine cabinet. It sure did bring back memories. We never took it orally. She just heated up the bottle in a pan of hot water and rubbed a little on our nose, forehead and chest. My grandson has a bad cold now and I told my daughter to go ahead and use it. It can't possibly expire, can it?

My mother grew up in Troy NY. She passed away in December at age 86. In her medicine cabinet I found 2 partly used bottles of Save the Baby. Both are in boxes. One has the set of directions. Interested?

I grew up in Hoosick Falls NY and I believe Save The Baby was manufactured in a garage style building at the foot of High St in Hoosick Falls.

I remember taking the bottle to college with me in 1971 just in case I needed it and sure enough, when I got chest congestion, it saved me from going to the doctor or missing classes. I just rubbed it on my chest and it did the trick. I so wish I had the recipe as I would make it for my family now. If anyone finds the recipe or can take their bottle for analysis, we would all appreciate it.

My mother used it on me and my sister back in the 60's. It works. I loved it. Wished i could have found it in the 80's to use with my children. FDA--get out of the way and approve thus formula. Let's bring it back. Lee's Save The Baby Oil.

can't tell you how many times save the baby made me feel so much better as a child my mother would heat it up rub it onto my chest and put a warm towel on my chest over it. Save the baby helped me get through the night and help me breathe helped calm my cough. I think it was a great medicine I understand taken internally was not such a good thing. the rub was a wonderful thing . miss it and wish they still made it!

Re: Sally Alligator (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

One of the stipulations sets forth that an analysis was made by an analyst of the United States Department of Agriculture of a sample of the shipment seized in these proceedings which shows that the composition and ingredients of the preparation are:

"Lard approximately 70% "Alcohol approximately 6% "Canada Balsam approximately 10% "Volatile Oils, including "Camphor, Rosemary Oil and "Origanum Oil, approximately 15%"

I remember save the baby I am 71 my brother had croup. I was used by my mother all the time. I believe it kept him alive. Remember just because it's old does not mean it was wrong.

It was made by the Lee's company and yes, it is patent protected.

The reason it is no longer available is that it contained Camphor, yes, even in the liquid that was taken internally and the FDA has recognized this as being unsafe. Camphor is now only approved to be used topically.

As to the other ingredients, I am sorry, I have been unable to discover that.

Does anyone else know?

I am doing some historical research about an Adirondack guide who knew Dr. William Lee and told a very funny story about Dr. Lee's daughter Iona. Could you briefly summarize Dr. Lee's time in North Creek? I understand he practiced medicine there during 1910-16, until he fell ill (what illness?) and then became county health official. Is that correct? Anything else you can tell me about him, either his personality or his work? What exactly did Dr. Lee do as a county health official? Finally, do you know of any sources where I could find further information about him? Thanks, and good luck with your own practice.

Save the baby did originate in North creek, NY but was produced in Watervilliet, NY. I lived next door to the building where it was made amd when they cooked it, the whole neighborhood smelled of camphor. The woman who owned the company was my "aunt" and my grand mother her secretary. Save The Baby was a wonderfulroduct and has seen it's sidevof pressure from big Pharm in it's attempt to remove this powerful product from the market. Chest colds, no problem. The patent was sold to a company in Canada after her death in the late seventies.

YAY! other ppl besides me know what Save the Baby is!!! i'm 38 & remember when i was sick, my granny would pour some on a rag, warm the rag over a kettle of boiling water or just open stove flame, then pin the rag to the inside of my jammies. the warmth & the smell remind me of her. i also remember that it also felt gritty, like there was sand in it or something. anyone else remember that part? would love to get my hands on some these days!!
