I am very sorry to read of the situation you are facing here, and I do understand your concern. You are right to worry, most prescription meds, of any type, do not mix well with alcohol.

Most drugs are metabolized through your liver, and I am sure I don't need to explain to you the effects alcohol has on the liver, so he is really giving himself a double whammy.

I am assuming your husband, as is normal for someone with his condition, is not concerned and will not listen to your concerns regarding his combining the two. I would recommend, though he will probably not be happy about it, that you talk to the doctor that is prescribing this about his chronic alcoholism, chances are he has not made the doctor aware of it, and also mention it to the pharmacist at the pharmacy where he gets his prescriptions filled.

As to what it does when combined with alcohol, you can see that this generic warning provided on the general patient advisory monograph is not very informative, so I will look further for details.

Do not consume alcohol while taking Fluoxetine. (Drink plenty of water while you're on this prescription.)

Fluoxetine is the generic version of Prozac, this is a selectice seratonin reuptake inhibitor and alcohol can also affect seratonin levels, these two tend to enhance the side effects of one another. Thus, even a few drinks can cause black outs, seizures, and etc. Seratonin syndrome, which is caused when there is too high of an amount of seratonin in your brain is also a possibility that can be fatal.
