Where can you get turpin hydrate elixer for mucous relief?
Re: Bruce D (# 19)
I had to find a walkin clinic with a foreign doctor (first dr was chinese, second was from india - american dr only wntd to prescribe whatever his drug rep told him to that week). Both foreign drs said terp works great & each dr wrote rx (2 years apart). Local compounding pharmacy filled it : )
In the 70s Terpin Hydrate was available over the counter for about $1 a bottle, while Big Pharma OTC's were going for four times as much. It was even a staple of the US Military for soldiers fighting off coughs and congestion. No other non-narcotic cough syrup was even close in effectiveness. Something which was cheap and more effective than anything else could simply not be allowed. The Big Pharma influence was used quite effectively to drive this product from the shelves. As they say, just "follow the money".
Re: Bruce D (# 19)
Hello, I have also experienced the profound and successful effects of this product. I was told yesterday that this drug is too cheap to produce and the medical associations will not put forth studies on the product because of that fact. Good old drug companies. So drug companies can't make enough money off of it. I still want to get some though. This is a most effective product. Oil of Turpentine is used for many things and is derived from pine trees. Naturally the product should not be abused. I say bring it back. I'll try the tussinex. Naturally I have the cold now and luckily am on the mend I think. There has been a terrible cough going around. Doctors do the best they can I like to think, however they do not believe in their patients or their patients knowledge or sometimes knowledge beyond their scope.
Re: michnewby (# 18)
I found a compounding pharmacy in NJ that has Terpin Hydrate!! Very pricey! $93 for a small bottle and prescription needed too. My Dr. won’t write the script and my health insurance plan won’t cover it either. Good Luck!!!
Re: ZebraBus (# 16)
Just wondering if you are in the United States? I would like to ask my doctor to order this.
Re: ZebraBus (# 16)
Thanks for the info. Just last month on a regular office visit I asked my new MD if he would be willing to write a script for Terpin Hydrate and he said yes. I have a local pharmacy that is willing and able to make it when I present a script. Like you said he told me it would be expensive but I know how well it always worked so I'm willing to pay it. Just waiting for the expected chest cold to get it.
Re: Joe (# 10)
Hi Joe, about once every two years (when I come down with a nasty cough) I ask my doctor to write two prescriptions for terpin hydrate – one without coding for daytime use, and one with codeine for night time to help me sleep. Definitely not cheap (unfortunately) but works like a charm! My health insurance will not pay for it (it's not "mainstream" enough lol) so it ends up being an out-of-pocket expense, and well worth it.
Correction to previous post: terpin hydrate does not in any way need to be a controlled substance. Terpin hydrate with codeine IS controlled, but it can be ordered without the codeine (although that diminishes its effectiveness). My doctor wouldn't prescribe it either so I went to a walk-in clinic with a foreign doctor who is familiar with it and immediately wrote a prescription. The doctor was concerned about the codeine possibly making me drowsy or otherwise diminishing response time, so I asked if would be willing to write 2 prescriptions: one for daytime use with no codeine, and a second prescription with codeine, but half-strength, so would help with coughing and sleep. Amazingly, I am now the proud owner of not one but two bottles of the wonder stuff. And it will probably last another several years lol. BUT BOY IT WASN'T CHEAP!
Re: Tommyc (# 3)
My Dr. refuses to write a prescription for this! I have made several requests too but she ignores me. In my exam
Last week she dismissed my request by saying that it’s made from turpentine!
Re: Bruce (# 12)
I actually have a small bottle of Elixir of Terpin Hydrate and Codeine that has a 1940's look to the label, brand name of Purepac. I rescued it from my wife's Aunt's house after she died. Since it's full and definitely smells like the stuff and old, I grabbed it figuring it most likely wasn't made anymore and might be of interest to somebody who collects such things, but have no idea what it might be worth. Had to be her husband's since being a barber his entire adult life, he was exposed to a lot of cigar and cigarette smoke back in the day, but most likely forgot he had any of this left and I doubt you could get any today, even with an Rx, that would contain codeine. One whiff doesn't exactly make one want to try it though, just nice to see something from a time when this was an otc medicine, no FDA, no DEA.
A few days ago I sent an email to my Dr. at the VCUMC asking her to write a Rx and to recommend a compounding pharmacy.

I got turpin hydrate cough syrup as a child from military pharmacy when I got sick and it worked wonders. The cough syrups they prescribe now don't do anything. This stuff really worked to clear mucus, sooth a sore throat, and stop the cough. The sugary syrups they prescribe now make be sick to my stomach and don't work any longer than a few hours. When I get sick now my doctor prescribes tussionex generic which works almost as well and doesn' t make me sick to my stomach since it is next to impossible to get turpin hydrate anymore.
Just saw my doctors physician assistant, since I can't get an appointment with my new family doctor until August, and she told me that Terpin Hydrate has codeine in it and that's why it has become prescription only. She said I had to ask my doctor for a prescription which I will do in August.
Searching for a source of Terpin Hydrate (non codeine). That always worked as a great expectorant for me, not like the junk on the market now.
Thanks.

I believe it can be filled in Canada as well - it is in no way a controlled substance, and was available over the counter in U.S. until the 1990's when other (less productive) cough syrups became the more prescribed.
When I was a kid (I'm now 67) my parents gave me Turpin Hydrate when I had a cold and was coughing my head off. That stuff was a magic elixir and stopped my coughing in minutes. It worked
My personal experience with terpin hydrate worked miraculously. I bet you prescribe acetaminophen and we all know that it damages livers.
As a physician, I am always appalled when folks think that doctors would try to keep something from them that works. Funny no one said anything about the bad reactions that can take place from terpin hydrate. And yes in comparison to the medicine the FDA has approved, terpin hydrate did not help coughs. "My momma always said" is not good science.
You got that right. It was the only cough medicine my parents gave me as a child. It works not like the crap on the market today that does nothing to stop coughs. I will be asking my doctor for a prescription on my next visit. Does anyone know if it is available from Canadian pharmacy's??
Zebrabus
Technically that is true but in our region of the country special ordering for this substance on average takes 2 to 3 WEEKS and that is considered a fast track time estimation.VERY FEW PRESCRIBERS are willing to issue an Rx for this substance, So this news isn't so great after all.
