Taking This Med, The Reaction From This Med (Page 3)

I was recently placed on this medication for sevear lower back pain. I recently found out that I have a herinated disk in my back, and disk degenerative disease. My doctor placed me on Dilaudid 8mg, which took all of my pain away. I felt very disorientated, though. I am now on the 4mg tabs every 6 hours. I noticed my pain is dull, but still there. Why do I have to fell out of it to be temoraily pain free? I have been on Vicodin HP, Morphine 60mg, Percocet 5, 7, and 10 mg. I have bounced from med to med trying to find the best results in my case. I am lost for what to do. The med that seemed to help the most was the Vicodin Hp, but I was afraid of the addiction factor. I know I will be on pain meds for the rest of my life, should I even be concerned about addiction?

Very well explained zippysgoddess. Addiction is drug seeking behavior. I have had 6 separate spinal fusions in the last 18 years with new hardware each time. I also have other back problems but I'm writing because I have been on Schedule II pain medications the whole 18 years. The most difficult thing for me to accept has been the amount of pain I am having to live with. We all deserve quality of life. That doesn't mean a pain free life but enough pain control that we can interact with others and be a functioning part of society. Too much medication or trying to be almost pain free can cause a person to build a tolerance to quickly sometimes? I have had nurses cry because I needed such huge doses of Demerol and Dilaudid after my last couple of fusion's, they were sure I would die and they didn't want that on their head! Luckily my last fusion 3 years ago helped enough I have been able to cut my daily dose in half! Its a tuff balancing act. The main thing is how very fortunate you are to have a pain doctor working with you and trying different medications. Many people are not so lucky! Dilaudid is a great pain killer but it peaks at around 2 hours. To be effective a person needs to take it every 4 to 6 hours. Demerol is also a short duration pain killer and one of the main reasons why its not a good choice for chronic pain. Morphine now comes in 12 and 24 hour time release tablets but like oxycontin they are expensive. Fentanyl used in the Duragesic patch is very potent and only needs changed every 2 or 3 days but is also very pricey. That leaves one of my very favorite pain medications, Methadone. It is long acting without time release because it takes several passes through the liver before it completely breaks down. Methadone is much more potent mg for mg than most pain killers. 10mg of Methadone is equal to about 20 mg of oxycontin. 3 80mg oxycontin was 240mg a day which didn't seem to be quite enough? So instead of 120mg a day of methadone you could try 140mg? Methadone comes in 5mg and 10mg tablets as well as a syrup which I have used. There is also a 40mg tablet but most pharmacies have to pre-order and don't like stocking them. If you took 4 10mg tablets of methadone every 8 hours you would need 12 pills a day and 360 a month which should only cost about $55 to $65. Also try zanaflex to relax muscle pain. Best wishes to all who have to live with never ending pain. May each day bring new hope!

Please remember, there is a very big difference between being DEPENDENT on narcotics and being ADDICTED to them.

Dependence is when you have a chronic/acute or fatal condition for which there is not other cure or solution, so you have to take the pain meds to function each day.

Addiction occurs when someone uses the meds for enjoyment purposes, not because they have to take them, their conditions are often cured, yet they continue to take the drugs because they don't know how to face life without them, and they continue to take more and more of them, often resulting to shooting them up, snorting them, or chewing them to get a quicker buzz and get the drug into their systems faster.

They do not come on here like you complaining about those feelings, they enjoy them.

That said, unfortunately, you will not find any good, strong, pain meds that do not provide those types of side-effects. They all do, though some may agree with your body more than others and therefore be gentler on you.

I, too, suffer pain everyday from a spinal condition, with no cure or surgical options.

I TO HAVE SEVERE LOWER BACK PROBLEMS! I'VE BEEN ON SO MANY DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF PAIN MEDS, IT'S GETTING CRAZY! I'VE BEEN TAKING OXYCONTAIN 80MG 3 TIMES A DAY ALSO NORCO 10-325 3 TIMES A DAY! I HAVE JUST HAD MY DOCTOR CHANGE MY MEDS AGAIN BECAUSE THE OXYCONTAIN IS SO SO EXPENSIVE & ADDICTIVE AND REALLY WASN'T HELPING! I AM NOW TAKING DILAUDID 4MG & NORCO 10-325 3 TIMES A DAY AND AM STILL IN PAIN! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO? I DO KNOW THAT WHEN I SEE MY DOCTOR & HE GIVES ME A SHOT OF DEMEROL I AM PAIN FREE FOR ABOUT 6 HOURS, SO IT SEEMS LOGICAL THAT DEMEROL SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED? I'M GOING TO ASK HIM NEXT VISIT TO PLEASE LET ME TRY 50MG DEMEROL AND 4 MG DILAUDID! I THINK THIS MIGHT FINALY BE THE MAGIC COMBINATION? I'LL WRITE BACK AND LET YOU KNOW!
