Surgery - Can't Take Oral Pain Meds

I am to have back surgery and can't take oral pain meds. What will doctors give me that can be administered intravenously? I have a friend who is an RN that will administer it to me. Or I can take a suppository. What works for back pain that comes in either form?

Has anyone been prescribed any other method of pain relief besides oral pain medication? How do you go about getting a doctor to prescribe pain medication that is not oral? Does the pain medication work as well? I am unable to tolerate oral pain medication and it makes me throw up and suffer stomach and bladder pain. It also affects my liver. I know it's not typical and most doctors are uncomfortable working outside of the box of their normal and typical routine. Has anyone had the same issue or been able to have surgery without oral pain medication???

There are other options available, usually IV Morphine is the preferred option, but it is entirely up to your doctor. There are also time released Fentanyl patches available.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as dizziness, headache, dry mouth, nausea, and constipation.

Have you already told your doctor about your issue taking oral medications?

Many times, some oral medications are given just before a surgery, so you need to make sure they are aware of your problem, beforehand.
