I am a spinal cord injury (SCI) and my SCI doctor has had me on this drug for 10 yesrs since my accident. It prevents Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), because I self-cath up to 8 times a day. I have not noticed any side effects other than an occasional yeast infection. Every couple months or so, I will stop taking it for a week or two just to give my system a break and so I do not build up a tolerance to it. However, if I stay off too long, I usually end up getting a UTI which then must be treated by a stronger antibiotic. This sulfa drug is considered a maintenance drug and I take it once a day. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.

Yes, you are right, that is a definite drawback to using these as maintenance meds, you do need a stronger antibiotic when you get an infection, since your body is so used to the one you are taking that it has almost no effect.
