Sulfamethoxazole And Alcohol

I have not taken sulfamethoxazole since Wednesday. Can I safely go out and have beers Saturday night?

According to The University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), taking Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim with alcohol may cause serious side effects, including but not limited to a racing or pounding heart beat, sweating, severe flushing and rapid breathing.

Since everyone is different there's virtually no way of knowing if you'll still be safe (even with a few days gap), but I would speculate that if you exercise caution and drink responsibly that you'd probably have nothing to worry about.

Have you discussed this with your prescribing doctor?
