Suddenly Stopped Levothrroxine

I stopped taking Levothyroxine cold because my script ran out and I had to go to Doctor for a refill and we were leaving on an extended trip. I didn't think it would be any big deal. After about 8-9 weeks my hair began falling out at an alarming rate. I am back on 25 mcg alternating to 50 mcg every other day, after returning home and getting to Dr. She wasn't as concerned with hair loss as she was my suddenly stopping so she spent time cautioning me to not let it happen again. My concerns, how long will it continue to fall out and will it grow back? Also since going back on it I am very nauseous and have a headache, will this discontinue after awhile? I do not recall feeling like this when I initially began taking 2 years ago.

Hello, Diane! How are you doing? Has there been any change?

Unfortunately, hair loss can be a side effect of this medication, as well as a withdrawal effect, the headache and nausea are also both normal side effects, according to the FDA. You may also experience dizziness.

Our bodies do change with time, so while you might not have had such side effects a few years ago, it can be normal to experience them, later, when restarting such a medication, after a break.

Has the hair loss slowed, at all? I totally freaked when I was on a medication that caused it. LOL

Was this helpful? 0
