Substitute Morphine Sulfate For Oxycontin
UpdatedHello: So I just got something from my insurance company telling me they no longer will pay for oxy 20 or the generic..which is off the market anyway. The substitute is morphine sulfate I believe..that's what they are covering. How much of this do I need to equal one 20mg? I take 3 20's per day.. Thanks for any help I can get..

Oxycodone is 1.5 times stronger than Morphine, so your daily dose would need to be 90mgs of Morphine to be equivalent, so on the same dosing schedule, you would take 30mgs of the Morphine, 3 times a day.

Are there any questions or comments?
Hi Ms. Verwon,
I learn something new from you all of the time. I was under the impression that Morphine was much stronger than Oxycodone. No wonder that when my doctor changed my meds from 5m percocet to 25m morphine it seemed as though the pain got worse so ask him to change it back, which he did.
Thanks for the info. You are the best.
I have CRPS and used to Oxycodone/Oxycotine (once per day because I was paying for out of pocket) for the pain but my insurance will no longer pay for it.
Recently because of the pain and $$ the doctor put me on Moraphine ER (15 mg) 3 times per day but the side effects are horrible.
Pounding heart and horrible horrible constipation. Is there a substitue that I can take hopefully without the side effects.
Is it true that if I try different medication and they do not work as well as the oxycodone that the insurance will pay for the oxycodone?
I am a 53 yr old Nanny of 5 and I need some help! It's renewal time for insurance at my husbands job ugh!! Im currantly taking 40mg oxycontin 3x a day which has worked somewhat for yrs. I have severe scoli even after surgery 18 yrs ago with toal fusion, rods, clips, pins and screws top to bottom. All my ribs were broke in half for two reasons one they used my own bone to fuse everything and two to minimize the "humps" My question is... what can I do to get off the oxycotin and find something less expensive but that will relive the pain so I can still be mobile and keep up with my gkids? Our ins that we have through his work will no longer offer the insurance coverage we now have and pay $925.00 a month for 3 of us. Awesome paying $25 a month for name brand and $10 generics no deductable on Rx's BUT now it's a 80/20 pay and $1000 dedct so that means I will pay my part $160.00 a month for the oxy alone not counting 3 other rx's. Im lost and Im scared the pain is tolerable at best with the 40mg 3x a day I just didnt want to increase the oxy anymore than I have. I need a better and cheaper option. PLEASE can anyone advise me how to approach this??? I also have medicare A&B as secondary but no part D on that. Help
In response to the original questin and even all the responses, morphine (oxymorphone such as Opana or MS Contin) is stronger than oxycodone, which could be Percocet, Roxicodone or OxyContin. All 3 are the same drug, just different formulations. @ PJS, I have CRPS also, hubby has AS. I don't use Opana but OxyContin & Dilaudid which is Hydromorphone...the strongest of the 3. You will not feel a "High" or any type of euphoria from Opana, but hey, we only want relief from the burning, searing pain, right? If you want to relieve the constipation, take senecot every time you take your meds & you will be fine. Oh, & drink plenty of water.
I have facial nerve damage to the trigeminal nerve and suffer chronic pain. Been taking 80 Mg oxycontin/day for 12 yrs after a visit to Mayo.. Insurance has refused to pay for it unless I try some other pain meds to see if they work--of course much cheaper. I am frightened other mess will not control the pain;any suggestions?
ive been on morphine long acting for a month now, ive been on it b4. I was on oxycotin long acting, and oxycodone for break threw pain. same thing the insurance wouldn't cover oxycotin, cuz its a brand name. morphine long acting works just as good, u take every 12 hrs. u may want to check needymeds....look up ur meds and big pharma will foot the bill for u
I have found a link which has a chart that gives the information regarding what medication is equivalent to another. I hope this helps everyone. By the way I misspoke about the oxycontin, apparently it is derived from opium. Nevertheless I know too many people that have been on that drug including myself, only 20 milligrams when I was in a hospital that did not want to use fentanyl patch. I absolutely refuse to be doped up and oxycontin literally made me out of it. Drooling everything and I am NOT going to be that kind of person. I absolutely must be on medication where I am able to drive and able to function just like any normal person. I have found that fentanyl patches and now the morphine sulfate er with percocet 7.5 is working for me in a sufficient manner to manage my pain. Of course that is in a combination with klonopin and klonopin does help with pain. Back when these i****s tried to say that I have fibromyalgia klonopin was the first line of defense for pain of course that was back in the eighties late eighties early nineties. Things have come a long way since then. Nevertheless klonopin does help manage pain. Another thing is Tylenol or excedrin which is a combination of Tylenol and aspirin and caffeine. However my pharmacist does have to order this specially, at this time the preferred pharmacy for Aetna under Medicare part d is Walgreens. Here is the link. I hope it helps.

Morphine Sulfate ER I been on many years have serious psratic arthritis Many auto immune problems Intestinal disease It at least makes my pain tolerable and can enjoy life somewhat I take 60 mg 2 a day 30 mg 1 day breakthru Hope this helps
I have psratic arthritis bad bones deteriorating shoulder replaced now bones in jaws lost all beautiful teeth This med Moraphine Sulfate ER 60 2 day 30mg 1 day for breakthru Works well enough to live somewhat confortably
My pharmacist lied to me last month. Said generic was ordered and was waiting. There is no generic for Oxycontin 20mg ER. He gave me name brand for the same price my Medicare and Medicaid pays. Pharmacists do not have a clue. Pathetic.
I have gotten mixed messages regarding generic Oxicontin ER. Purdue has monopoly on this med and no longer makes generic yet my pharmacist told me last month he is waiting for generic to delivered. He finally have me brand name. Don't no who is lying. Thank God my Medicare and Medicaid covers this. Sue
Re: Aubrey (# 8)
Where is site that give substitutes for medication. Help appreciated. Sue
Re: Sue (# 11)
The pharmacist doesn't know what he's talking about. Purdue has the patent on Oxycontin until 2025. No generics will be allowed before then. You can look up this information on the internet and read more in depth than my answer if you would like. It would be nice if we did have a generic for it that followed the original formula that really worked and was signifigantly cheaper, but right now we are all stuck paying for the abuse deterrent name brand that lasts maybe 7 hrs for pain instead of 12 hrs. Re: Aubrey (# 8)
Is that Tylenol # 3? I am almost out and with the scare about opiates I wonder if I'll be out of luck in getting a refill.I only use when the pain in lower back knocks me off my feet.At 83 I doubt I'll o.d.

I call my pharmacy week early to order the script I will get from my doctor
I also order my oxicodone by Auralife U17 10mg 4/5 xday a week before I get it. Try that. Sue
