There's really no way to say how long you can expect relief, because it can vary from person to person. They are usually given every 3 to 4 months.
As to what you can request for pain, it would actually be best not to require a specific medication. Most doctors will view that as being drug seeking behavior. The best approach would be to inform them of your continuing pain and let them suggest a solution.
