Slept For Almost 2 Days (Top voted first)
UpdatedI was prescribed amitriptyline for my back pain. I took one 4mg on Tues night at 9pm. I slept most of the 22nd. Maybe awake 3 hours out of that day, but was very confused! I woke up at noon on the 23rd. Is this drug too strong for me or is this normal? Could it be the combination of the two medications amitriptyline and tizanidine? I feel gittery, heart racing, confused and very tired! Please send any information that might help me understand this reaction to these drugs.

I have suffered from chronic pain for 7 years. At one point I started have full body aching I hurt all over. My Dr. perscribed amitriptyline 2 75mg at bedtime. I woke up the next day feeling 100% better. I was tired and sleepy but for the pain it worked great. Every once in a while I have trouble sleeping so I cut a tablet in half ,I have trimed back my useage to 1 pill a night, just so I don't get finger pointers on abuse, anyway I take the extra 1/2 and get a great nights sleep. I don't say it's great but it has worked well for me. Side note no side effects when trimming back except trouble falling asleep.
I take this drug and had the same reaction in the begining but I was warned this would happen. My Dr. started me on 1/2 a pill then after a few days a whole one then agradually over the next few weeks up to two. After a short period The sleepy affect quit and it does not bother me at all unless for some reason I miss it for a couple of days ( happened twice) then ahad to build back gradually. Perscribed for fibromialgia and does help. Give it a chance.
I hope you are aware that this is NOT a pain reliever. This is an antidepressant that has helped some people with certain types of nerve pain, but it does not work like a regular pain reliever or a narcotic.
As to sleeping, it is very hard to say, these do cause drowsiness, but not usually that bad. It sounds like you have had a bad reaction and may need to call your doctor about it.
Unless you combined this with alcohol, narcotics, or other things that could enhance its sedative effects, it should not have knocked you out for that long.
Please call your doctor ASAP.
I was given amitriptyline and i dont take it oftern but i suffer with fibromialgia and find it helps in bad times when i fisrt took ths drug i slept a lot what i found helpfull but the last time i took it i slept but when i come round from my sleep the plant in the front room was moving with light on so now i dare not take it again
I took amitriptyline before and I slept 2 days, another dr. tryed me on it again, I slept for 2 days. I told the dr. and he said that I don't need to take it again.Today he gave me a script for more of it.I didn't realize it til I got home from pharmacy. But I will not take it,this one is 75 mg, the other one that I tryed before was only 25 mg.
Each and every single time I have taken this medication, I have been out, completely out, for at least 12 hours afterwards.
I was prescribed this medication, as well. It was prescribed to me for migraines and my doctor prescribed me 150 MG. it is like a tranquilizer. I was to take it every night at bedtime and within 45 minutes, I was knocked smooth out. If I was not in bed by the time it took affect, I was just out for atleast 10-12 hours wherever I was. I would fall asleep on the couch and my husband would just sleep on the other couch because he knew there was no waking me up. So, in 2012, I stopped taking it. I took myself of of it because I was so tired of being out like a light and once I was out, I had no idea what was going on around me or anything. I got tired of feeling like that. So, then I started working in the ER at a local hospital and I was talking to one of the ER docs and asked him what the normal dose was for this drug. He said he has been an Er doc and has had his own clinic for over 40 years and he has never ever given anyone more than 25 MG. he told me it was a tranquilizer and he was glad I took myself off of it. So, it isn't a very good drug, he also told me it was a very old drug. So, I'm very glad I made the choice to get off of it. I actually have a life and am aware of my surroundings and know what's going on. Good luck!!
I am on 25mgs and the only side effect I'm having from it is a whole lot of weight gain... I have not experiemced what everyone else is going thru.. I was prescribed this for my migraines and depression.. And it works like a miracle for me... No migraines. No depressed moods.. Feel great when I wake up... When I FIRST started it I had a tiny bit of tired feelings.but nothing to want to fall straight out.... I am not understanding why ppl are falling asleep for 2 days... Wow.. That's not good... But it works just fine for me... I guess Bcus everyone body is different.. Different metabolism levels and etc... It's awesome for me. No more headaches.
