Hi there. My son is 9, just started 18 mg of Concerta 3 days ago. Already he has had trouble sleeping. Didn't fall of til close to midnight and lost at least 3 hrs. of his usual sleep. I'm worried this is going to be counterproductive for him. Any advice? Thank you!

It is a stimulant medication, so it can cause insomnia, especially when someone first starts taking it. This is a side effect that should wear off in a few weeks, after his body adjusts to the medication.

I do, however, understand your concern, as this can be disruptive in many ways, especially to his education, so you might wish to speak to his doctor if it continues, he may need a low dosage or a different medication.

What time of day is he taking it? It is usually best that it be taken in the morning, so the worst of the effects are worn off by the time he does to bed.

Has his sleeping improved, at all?
