Unless your doctor has instructed otherwise, it should be taken just before a meal, so it has time to start working, by the time you are digesting your food and may experience the most blood sugar fluctuations.

The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, flatulence, and hypoglycemia.
