what does the zyd stand for? I have one with and one without zyd.

That is an abbreviation for the name of the manufacturer, Zydus Pharmaceuticals. Your pharmacy likely just didn't list it on the other one.

The FDA lists Simvastatin as being used to help lower cholesterol levels and typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and joint/muscle aches.
