Hello, Ann! How are you?

Simvastatin is used to help lower cholesterol, most people are more familiar with it by the brand name Zocor.

Learn more Simvastatin details here.

Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and joint/muscle aches.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Ann,

If you need medication to lower your cholesterol, please think about what I am writing to you.

Another serious side effect of Simvastatin and ALL "statins" are that these medications can raise your liver enzymes. I took Simvastatin for 6 months, and then went for blood work that is required by my Psychiatrist because I take Lamictal, and it can also raise your liver enzymes. My liver enzyme level was 346, when it is supposed to be 40 or under. I never had raised liver enzymes before this. My Primary Care doctor asked if I was taking any new medication, and I said yes, that I was taking generic Senekot Stool Softener and Laxative every night, which was not authorized by any doctor. He told me that no one should ever take a laxative on a daily basis, only once in a while. He blamed the Senekot for the liver enzyme raise. I stopped taking it all together, and in 6 months had my blood work done as I do every 6 months. My liver enzymes were than 742! I was shocked. He then took me off the Simvastatin, and in 2 weeks, the level was tested, and it went down to 132. I am waiting to get my next blood test in December to see what it is now. I only took this drug for 6 months and it seems to have had a permanent effect on my liver. My liver enzymes never went back to normal. It has been 2 1/2 years now and the level is still in the 130's range. I take Colestipol now for my high cholesterol.

To sum this up, if you are able to avoid the use of a "statin," please try to talk to your doctor and see if he/she will put you on another category of cholesterol medication. The best of luck to you!
