Silly Question But Fear Of Contrave
UpdatedI am concerned while on Contrave if I have a wreck, what could be given for adequate pain relief, would naltrexone negate all meds and I suffer in agony? Just wondering, I had hip replacement and woke up in agony, wouldn't want anyone to go through that

Hi Brenda,
That's a really good question actually. My findings suggest that your suspicion surrounding Naltrexone is true. According to NIH (US National Institute of Health), Naltrexone completely blocks the subjective and other effects of opioids.

Having read this, it sounds to me like you'd probably need to talk with your doctor about coming off Contrave in order to receive the most benefit from any opioid-based pain medication.
Unfortunately I'm not aware of any other pharmaceutical drugs that provide the same level of relief as opiates/opioids. Have you considered looking into medical marijuana as a means of adjunctive therapy?
The answer given is not exactly correct. It is true that Opiates should not be prescribed if there is an alternative in the presence of acute pain.
There are several emergency use, non- opiate pain meds which should not react badly with Contrave.
Also, the makers of Contrave have recently changed the prescribing literature, to make the wording about what happens when an opiate is given. There is a chance of overdosage with the opiate as well as " possible withdrawal type symptoms".
Obviously, the person taking Contrave should wear an Emergency Medical ID bracelet or necklace while taking the medication, as none of us can anticipate a car accident or other accident which would require short term opiate or substitution medication. Please Google the prescribing info for Contrave. It is not as dire as it used to be. I just started taking it again after a 2 year low weight period, and am not as scared about having a kidney stone attack/ surgery ( always an emergency) as I was the first time around. The amount of Naltrexone is 5 mg. Google the drug in the amount given per day, which is 10 mg. ( but only 5 mg should be bio-active at any given time if renal and liver function are normal.)
