Side Effects Of Cipro

5 month ago I took Cipro for three days and ended up in ER for not being able to breath due to swelling of throat, mouth including my gums and tong. I've been seeing an specialist for drug related side effects, also Dr. Mao for holistic treatment including acupuncture. It has helped some, but There are many days that I feel that I'm back to square one, my gums are so soar that my dentist suggested not to go through routine clean-up. I also have difficulty sleeping and wake up with terrible night sweat. Can any one help

I live in West LA, CA. I've visited specialist for drug reaction in UCLA and taken probiotic , cortisone and steroids and non of them worked they sent me to Dr. Mao for treatment and it has worked a little bit I'm on a special organic diet , some of it provided by dr. Mao, no caffeine, teaine, red meat and alcohol. I'm still not well.

I too am curious as to why this 'class' of antibiotics cause such adverse side effects. I cannot take Cipro OR LEVAQUIN because both have same effects. Cipro I know for a fact that all it takes is one pill and within an hour I am near collapse, unable to stand, heart racing, breathing is labored, shallow and rapid, severe nausea, and alarming elevation in BP. All I remember was the systolic was 250 as my husband called the doctor. I say 'collapse' because it is as close to Anaphylactic shock as I want to come. Did not lose consciousness, so reaction cannot be called such I would assume. Later on, Levaquin was attempted and resulted in virtually identical side effects (tho perhaps less severe), My PCP said that although rare, I must be among the small percent of the population who cannot tolerate this 'class' of antibiotic. I wonder what 'class' this is and what other antibiotics are included. Are these among what is termed as 'broad spectrum antibiotics'?

Now, if an antibiotic is needed my options are limited to Rx of sulfa-based drugs.

What you've both experiences are not side effects, but allergic reactions, there is a big difference. Side effects are not life threatening, they are usually just annoying and wear off as your body adjusts to a medication, or your course of treatment with it has finished.

Allergic reactions can be life threatening, they are very dangerous and the effects of them can linger long after the medication has been discontinued.

As to the actual drug class, both Cipro and Levaquin are Fluoroquinolone class antibiotics and, in reality, it was remiss of your doctor(s) to prescribe another one for you, if you already had a bad allergic reaction to one of them.
