I have been on amitrip for 8 months and it did wonders for my chronic migraine attacks and bad sleeping habits. Side affects are horrible. I experienced the weight gain and excessive urinating. I started on out 50mg, now I am down to 10mg and hopefully by the end of the summer, I can be off this meds. Caution, do not just try to stop taking this meds, you have to slowly wean yourself off. I tried to come off to early and my migranes came back with a VENGENCE.

It will get better with time. Take right before bed. I take them, it takes about 2 weeks to build up in my system. I suffer from cluster "headaches", They are horrible migraines that I get at least 3 times a day. After about 2 or 3 weeks this medicine knocks them completely out. This medicine has been a God send for me in the past. Today has been 2 weeks and 1 day being back on this medicine and today has been a "good day" so far.

Take them 3 hours before bedtime as its great as a seditive and allows you to sleep all night, and in the morning your bright as a daisey. I use them for over active nerv endings caused they stress, i cud litterally befor want to rip my head off it felt so irratable with pains in my neck and skull, these tablets have completley changed my life, only downfall is wait gain :( so need to go back to docs, ive gained 6 lb grrrrrrrrr

How long did it take to see weight gain? I've been taking 50mg of amitriptyline for 3 months and have only had dry mouth. But in the last week, without changing my eating habits, I seem to be gaining a little weight. Is it possible to see weight change after being on the amitriptyline for 3 months?

Only on 10 mg I take it just as I get in bed and I haven't had a bad head for ages thank god I couldn't go with out the I have ran out at the min but got to pick up at the chemist but for the past week I haven't had them I've had heart burn is it just me or could this be a side effective

I'm hesitant to try amitriptyline again as I did take it many years ago with a bad reaction- I think, from reading your comments, my low dosage prescribed this time around, should be given a chance. Thanks for all your help!

I have been taking these now only for 2 days I feel like s*** and bad headaches and I still can't sleep so after reading all your comments I think they can go into the bin and I will find another way of sleeping!

Never!
Elavil IS as it turns out VERY addicting and VERY hard to get off of!
I was on it for three years and weaned off because I hated " not feeling anything"... Months later I'm back on it because no matter how hard I tried not to feel bad I did!
Months mind you I was off of them and now back to feeling nothing and still feel like crap!

I have been prescribe 10mg Amitriptiline for neuropathy pain I took first tab last night had a headache when I got up but it seems to have gone after a walk wife said I slept on my back and snored so I slept better.

Hello Sharon you reminded me of my Dad. My Dad had a high powered job like your husband. He was a very busy man and he travelled a lot on his job. When he retired at 57 he was cut off from his busy routine. He went into depression after that. This is normal for people who shut down their routine life suddenly. But this is not good. Talk to him have and him do something he likes like a hobby. Go out for long walks and do some travelling together if possible. If you have close families and friends try to visit them as often as possible. You need to get him out of the house as often as possible and talk to him often. After his retirement he might have a feeling of his unworthiness which is not true. All busy people go through this problem and it can be fixed. Love him more now than you ever did.

I started 10mg of ami on Friday. It's now Monday, so I've taken 3. Was prescribed it for sinus pain, jaw pain, migraines and lack of sleep. Also depression, but dr says dose too low to affect that & need counselling.

The pain is still there but has moved 1 foot to the left of me ;)

I have dry mouth, and some constipation, but biggest side effect is increased libido. Perhaps a little too much! I am sleeping much better, but before and after have only one thing on my mind. It's very distracting. Should I ask to take 5mg instead of 10? I'm not sure I can keep functioning like this. I have urgent work to do, & can't be bothered.

You probably couldn't sleep because you STOPPED taking it, not because you were. As you stated you slept great while on them, but It's actually very normal to experience insomnia etc when you begin withdrawls from all different kinds of meds but especially ones that induce rest. I think your doctor misunderstood, and or should've continued to prescribe it if it helped you sleep but with a lot of these kinds of meds they'll suggest you take them every other day, or every two as to avoid becoming dependent on them while simultaneously allowing your body to self regulate your sleep cycle. I have the same thing when I stop taking it when previously taking it daily, but if I spread it out, I don't have much withdrawl at all.

Also to keep in mind with drugs like these it's also normal to have weeks or even a couple months for the therapeutic effects to completely stabilize, and anything that effects seratonin and the other neurotransmitters will have some degree of withdrawl. What you experienced is actually normal and to be expected :)

I was given these for an injury that hasnt got any better. I have been taking these now for just over 2 weeks. After 3 days I felt a bit squiffy about 90 mins after but since not really had any relief and the only side effect and sorry to say is constipation is this normal? I haven't had a dry mouth felt crap sleepy or anything else - am I weird?? Or lucky??

i have been put on aciclovir 5 a day and amitriptyline 1 a night incresing to two a night after a week i have shingles and thought it was a pain killer will they help the pain? i am not depressed at all

I have only been on it for a week now but find I am unable to sleep...up all night and don't feel too bad during the day but I know it's gonna bite me one of these days soon. Having leg cramps, too. Anyone else? Sounds like most folks are sleeping well.
