Shelf Life Sulfamethoxazole
(Newest replies first)

I want to long-term store sulfamethoxazole for potential emergency use. What is the PRACTICAL shelf-life of this antibiotic? Forget about the manufacturer's statements. I want a real-world shelf life and storage instructions.

I done a little research and found sulfamethoxole has a shelf life of at least 5 years if kept cool and in adark place. Do some online research yourself about the D Mannose compound. It is a sugar that is found in small quantities in cranberries. It is not metabolized by humans and passes out quickly through urin. Ecoli bacteria have little finger like appendages used to hold onto the lining of the urinary that. The D Mannose compound sticks to these appendages and prevents the ecoli from adhering to the urinary track walls allowing them to be flushed out with urin. There are no known side effects.
Anyone going to answer my question above?diverticulitis and shelf life Smz
I'm having diverticulitis flare up. I have a half bottle of SMZ-TMP 200 -40 MG /5ML SUSP. IT was filled on 9/9/16. It expires on 3/9/17. I took it for UTI. I thought I could use this for v the flare up. Is it safe for me to take it?
David, thanks! I was thinking in those terms, as well. And, no long term storage of the cyclines!!
I have long-term problems with UTIs, having had more than 20 since 1999, and want to hold a supply in our motorhome for travelling, and a supply in our home in the event of a break-down in the supply system. Again, thanks for the info.
From what I could gather, the estimated shelf life of the oral suspension and tablets are both 5 years. The manufacturer's storage instructions also suggest keeping it at room temperature and out of direct sunlight (below 86 degrees fahrenheit), to help prevent further degradation.
According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, most types of medications are actually safe to use up to 10 to 15 years after their supposed expiration date listed by the manufacturer. However, there are some antibiotics in the Cycline class, which can be dangerous, after they expire, causing severe liver damage and failure, so they would have to be avoided.
I hope this info helps to answer your question!
