Sertraline Lu D01
UpdatedMy client was taking sertraline G4960/25mg and then her pharmacy switched to lud01. She reports it works differently - makes her angry and agitated. Could this really be a side effect from a different manufacturer? Thank you.

Hello, Kay! How is she doing?
Under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, generic medications are allowed to differ from the name brand, in the amount of the active ingredient, by as much as plus or minus 20%. They also don't have to measure against each other, only against the name brand. The FDA considers this an acceptable therapeutic window and it was put in place to help bring generics to market faster.
However, sometimes when a person is sensitive to medications, or has been taking the same one for a long time, even a slight fluctuation may cause problems. Based on the symptoms she's described, my best guess would be that this new one is a little lower in the amount of the active ingredient than the prior one she was receiving.
Since the differences are very slight, however, most people will adjust after a week or two.
Is there anything else I can help with?
