Are there any differences between the RXP 500 and the M 500 Metformin pills besides one is bigger than the other?

Hi Anie,
After digging deeper into this investigation, I do see your dilemma. Both Sandoz and Apotex (Canada) are claiming that the M 500 tablet is their own version of Metformin 500mg.
Canada's DIN # database for "02167786", depicts the "M 500" (APO-METFORMIN) tablet as being a product of APOTEX INC. (hence the 'APO'). Apotex's version of "M 500" reportedly contains the following set of inactive ingredients: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose type LF, magnesium stearate, methylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, and titanium dioxide.
Sandoz's version of "M 500" with a DIN # of "02246820" is also said to be the same thing, without the APO in front, but has the following (different) set of inactive ingredients: povidone K 90, magnesium stearate; film-coating: hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E 171), and macrogol 4000.
Lastly, the DIN # 02385341 is associated with Metformin HCL 500mg made by a company called Sivem, out of Canada. They describe their pill as a white round biconvex, film-coated tablet debossed on one side with "RXP" on top of "500" and scored on the other side.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion!
Re: David (# 1)
There happens to be two different metformin pills with M 500 written on it. The first also has APO written on it. DIN is 02167786. The second is blank on the other side. I can't find a picture of it nor the DIN anywhere.
This last pill and the rxp 500 have both been passed to me as Sandoz's metformin. I'm trying to find the truth because I react with severe pain to some of the generic forms of metformin.
Any clue about what is the M 500 with a blank side and which pill really is from Sandoz?
Is rxp 500 metformin the same as m500? Are the dosage and effects the same between one another?
Hi Donna,
From what I could gather, both medications contain 500mgs of Metformin.
The only noticeable differences in my findings are found within the list of inactive ingredients.
The M 500 Metformin pills contain: Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose type LF, magnesium stearate, methylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, and titanium dioxide.
The RXP 500 Metformin pills contain: Microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, colloidal anhydrous silica, and magnesium stearate; film coating: lactose monohydrate, methylhydroxypropyl cellulose, titanium oxide, and polyethylene glycol.
For your own reference, the DIN (Drug Identification Number) for RXP 500 is 02385341 and the DIN # for M 500 is 02167786.
I hope this helps!
