Rocephin Side Effects (Top voted first)
UpdatedI had an inj. two days ago in the side of my upper thigh/hip area. For a mild kidney infection. The pain was excruciating. A minute later I turned white and almost passed out. I had been consuming plain water in abundance and solids regularly and wasn't having stomach disturbances; I am doubtful the near-fainting had anything to do with dehydration but they immediately give me an iv of saline and Torodol. They also had me take an oral anti-nausea medication. I'm a bit on the thin side but am also muscular especially in my thighs and but from long-distance running. The pain started not long after the iv painkiller wore off, about 8-12 hours later. The patheaters at the inj. site and shoots down my leg whenever I put any weight on it or even lightly touch it. I do not have any pain when simply laying or sitting still. The clinic failed to give me a summary of the treatment I had received, something I over-looked while slightly woozy from the other medications. As well as from the symptoms of the kidney infection. It is painful but not impossible for me to walk. But making it to the bathroom to deal with the diarrhea from the oral meds is a real problem. I've already had an accident because I can't use the muscles needed to "clench" when I feel the urgency without considerable pain. I'm now missing work merely because I fear not being able to make it the rest room in time. I am going to call the clinic and request a summary of my treatment from my initial visit. On my follow up visit I was informed that I may have mild pain for a short period but that Advil and an ice pack should take of it. No real explanation was given. I was planning on running a marathon in two weeks that I've been training for since March. I'm not racing due to the stress that it would put my already weakened immune system but the pain alone would prevent me.

Hello, Feistyrunner! How are you feeling? I'm sorry that you've been in so much pain.
What most likely happened is that it was injected a bit too fast, which can cause a pool of the medication to form intramuscularly, this can be quite painful for a week or more and be really annoying in addition to the other side effects you may experience, like nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
Whenever anyone receives such an injection, they should be told to rub it out, afterwards, thus, I'm letting you know of anytime you may receive another shot in the future, be it a flu shot, antibiotic, pain medication, Tetanus or whatever, unless you are specifically told not to, rub it out afterwards. Take one of two knuckles and firmly run over the administration site, not so rough that it hurts and your bruise yourself, just firmly. If the shot was given too fast, this will help break up any bolus left under the skin or in the muscle to prevent that type of pain.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Thanks!
I've had plenty of shots before but never anything that caused me to almost black out from the pain. And they never told me about rubbing it out afterwards, probably because I scared them by almost blacking out. The nurse did seem to be having some trouble with the injection so perhaps more forced was used than usual.
It's now been four days and it still hurts just as bad. Would getting a massage help, since the pain involves the muscles?
At this point nothing but time is going to help. Once the bolus is allowed to form in there, it bruises the surrounding muscles and tissues, which is why the pain continues for awhile and that will just have to heal up on its own.
Any remaining substance is slowly absorbed to move through your body and be used just like it is supposed to be.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
