Remicade & Teeth
UpdatedHas anyone seen any effect on their teeth when they have been on remicade for a long time. My dentist seems to think this is my problem. Thank you. Please, someone answer as soon as possible.
I have been on Remicade for years, and I had a problem with my teeth, but it was not related. I was on Depo Provera for five years, and that made my teeth very brittle and decay very rapidly. My dentist was SHOCKED. It also caused Ostiopenia in my spine. I have the spine of an 80 year old woman and I am only 27! Check your other medications to see if it could be something other than the Remicade.
yes. my teeth became loose on the left side plus a lot ofother issues including a few absesses in my mouth.
me too, I've been on it for 3 years and have now had 2 root canals and several fillings. More than my entire life. Also, my teeth are always sensitive to hot and cold.
My son has only had three remicade treatments and is constantly telling me his teeth are so sensitve. Every time he eats hot or drinks something cold he hurts.
Anyone feel this way after only a few treatments?
Been on remicade approix. 5 years. went for cleaning 6 mo ago,had 6 cavities fixed. went again yesterday had 10 more to be fixed. never had cavities before remicade. what gives? anyone else having this problem?
what kind of mouth sores do I have to be concerned about taking Remicade?
Got my first treatment of remicade a week ago my teeth have become sensitive and funny taste in my mouth.
I have had 2 Remicade infusions and ever since, my teeth hurt. They are hot and cold sensitive, as well as sensitive to touch. They seem loose, also.
im glad i found this. I have been on remicaide for about 8 years and my teetth are horrible. i have two bridges on the top that cover all of my front teeth. i have two teeth on the right top and two teeth on the top left that have had rootcanals n crowns. i just had a bridge on my bottom left put in and 6 root canals and crowns on my bottom front and i need to have a bridge on my bottom right. my dentist says he thinks it is the prednizone and the remicaide but nothing to back it up. :(
I was on Remicade for three years until about three months ago and now on Humira. I have teeth problems also. My feelings will not stay in, I am contantly chipping teeth because they are so brittle, my gums bleed very easily and my teeth ar so sensitive. I am going to an oral surgeon today to have a tooth that had a root canal removed because it has broken off at the gum line. I know it is Remicade and Humira (same biologic make up). I try to eat Greek yogart to add extra calcium but it does not help. I know your pain and the pain everyone else is posting about. I am 49.
Ever since starting Remicade 3 years ago I have had 4 fillings and 2 broken teeth. The second of the 2 just took place this morning and I am on my way to either have a root canal or extraction done. Prior to all of this I had never had a cavity and I am 36 years old.
I have been on remicade for 4 years and my teeth are in terrible shape. I have three that have broken off at the gum line. My teeth are sensitive to hot and cold and chip very easily. My fillings are falling out and we don't have dental insurance. Not sure what I will be able to do.
I too have had recurring issues since being on Remicade. I had been on Humira prior to the Remicade and Enbrel prior to that. I have had psoriatic arthritis for over thirty years and started out with Gold Injections. I had to go on Remicade in 2009 as I was transferred over to Medicare after being on disability for two years. Medicare does not pay for home injections, hence the Remicade (which is about $12,000.00 per treatment) Far more costly than Humira. I even have Blue Cross Blue Shield as a supplement but still have to stay on Remicade. This is thanks to our government.( I had to add that! ) But I have had thousands of dollars of dental worked over the last 3 years and it is non stop. Today a tooth just broke, totally disintegrated without warning. I, like some of you, have had crown after crown and bridges as well. Dental insurance is very limited so I have had to pay for all this. I have researched side effects but they state nothing so I am glad I found this site. I am at the point to consider a denture as I cannot keep paying for root canals and build-ups (one tooth was $2,000.00 alone) I am so frustrated but I see I am not alone here. Thanks for letting me babble on about this. I plan to write the drug company about this. Has anyone here written them?
So glad to read your post . One of my molars just broke off yesterday and another filling has a hole in it. All this almost immediately after 1st REMICADE treatment! A friend of mine who was on REMICADE mentioned it was a side effect and that she'd had thousands in dental work while on it. CRAP!! Better look into dental insurance.
I have never had good teeth having non of the advantages of fluoride. I've always had to spend a fortune on my teeth. I 've been on Remicade for 10.5 yrs. Many of my problems began when I visited a perio. He did a deep cleaning and then went ahead and operated on one side of my mouth being upper right.. I've been through a terrible experience. I've never seen such a ruthless bunch of so-called professionals as the dental people. I really feel their greed and desire to keep their big offices going has contributed far more to my dental problems than the Remicade ever did. I'm off Rem now and another tooth just broke off today however it has been filled for 50 yrs. The distress brought on by these so called pros who work in teams referring back and forth is a joke. Guess they feel strength in numbers. Never realized how wonderful my old dentist was. He kept me together and they have had a ball tearing me apart. I could name 7 at this point.
I have had two teeth break within a year. Been on Remicade 8 years. Thinking may have something to do with poor absorption of calcium and body going to teeth to get what it needs.
I posted in Feb and it's now Dec. I have 3 more teeth that have broken off and two with chips. Thank God they are not in the front. I have one implant waiting for buildup. My mouth is beginning to hurt on the roof behind my teeth. I use strong Listirine to numb it. I an still on Humira.
Yes, I have been on Remicade for ten years. I have lost three teeth and have to have many caps and work done often. My teeth get very sensitive and often pieces break off. The sensitivity comes and goes but the teeth are not in good shape at all and I have always taken good care of my teeth. I figure this is one of the side-effects but I can' t get along in life without the Remicade. I was so relieved to read this blog. I thought it might be just me. Wish that something could be done as I take extra calcium etc. but to no avail. I sure wish I had some dental insurance.
I've been on remicade for six months now, and after my very first shot I experienced throbbing pain on both sides of my teeth, upper and lower. It goes all the way down my jaw and all the way up to my eye. It usually goes away in about two weeks after the shot. All of the pain seems to come from teeth that have had root canals. I had a tooth that had had a root canal, but was broken again a few years later and had to be pulled. It has recently started hurting as if it was still there. Phantom tooth pain is a new one for me.
Hi, YES. I have seen about 4 dentists (two of NYU's top as a family favor) as my teeth began to decay unreasonably quick. Three said that the Remicade is likely the cause of my unusual decay and the forth did the proverbial dance around it but was just insulating himself from it. I lost my front tooth. I'm not getting into details (in case there is a legal suit -- I'll have my words then) but lets just say that after several years of trying to mend my teeth to no avail, my goal to save for a home has officially taken a back burner to getting my whole mouth done with implants. This runs about $20,000 (and that's not NYU prices). I'm 31 now and after trying to be flexible with my dental issues (good practice I learned from Crohn's), I cannot see pursuing any kind of life while having to go to the dentist every two weeks. For what anyway? "Not even a remote chance that my teeth will survive with even minimum functionality by the time I'm 40." Okay, I'm venting and don't wan to be that guy :-) I don't' usually blog, ever actually, but I just had to share because my back's to the wall here. Love to discuss this topic with anyone who has been affected.

I have had 2 teeth cut out a couple of weeks ago and I just broke a tooth on a soft peanut butter cookie. This one and one other had fillings in them. One did not.
Re: Denicia (# 52)
Hi Denicia, I am so sorry to hear of your consequential tooth decay. We all have to stick together and report these adverse effects. Please go to the web link in my post (# 51) to report your case to the FDA.
It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes and it is our starting point for collaborating an attempt at reasonable compensation from the Owner of the drug (Remicade).
PLEASE EVERYONE! LOG YOUR ADVERSE EFFECTS AT THE WEBLINK IN POST # 51!!! Without it we can't move forward towards our shared goal of being compensated for not being warned of these adverse effects.
Re: kat (# 3)
I have had darn near my whole mouth worked on. Crowns and bridges. My dentist says they are decaying from the inside out.
Re: penny (# 50)
Hi Penny, AND ALL.
My name is George and I am number 20 on this thread. I have had about 10 extractions due to Remicade causing tooth decay and essentially I believe that since the drug is meant to suppress the immune system, it can suppress other parts of the bodies' immune defenses. It is supposed to attack the overactive immuno-protein , Tumor Necrosis Alpha Factor (TNA-F) which the protein (as far as I know) is the cause of inflammation in Crohns Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients. It does a great job in suppressing TNA-F, however it acts like that of a smart bomb; it kills the target but often has collateral damages such as our teeth! I checked the FDA Adverse Reaction Registry (which collects data from people like us who report it to them) for tooth problems related to Remicade. The reported cases were not high. I suspect that the affected patients with the same Tooth issues as all of us simply have not reported their cases. We cannot be the ONLY ones with this issue. Having said that, I would think a next step for ALL OF US is to spread the word across social media. I have never sent a MASS Notification such like this one and do not know how to. I will start researching how to go about this.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CREATE AND SEND A MASS NOTIFICATION INFORMING OUR ISSUE AND URGING OTHERS TO REPORT TO FDA, AS WELL AS HERE???
Someone below mentioned that we should report it to the FDA and they provided a link which I used (Thank You) to report my Dental decay issue. It took 15 mins!!! Here is the hyperlink (copy & paste in your browser):
https://www.fda.gov/safety/medwatch/howtoreport/default.htm
We should all work together to get the FDA to investigate Remicade and Tooth Decay.
THANK YOU FOR READING :-)

Re: JB (# 5)
i am having problems also like that. lots of extractions now because of decay and i get cleanings every 3 months
I've had to get several crowns, fillings due to Remicade causing decays to my teeth, mostly at gum line. Very very expensive. I value my teeth and smile. It has cause me to be depessed about my mouth. I know hold my hand over my mouth to hide my teeth due to embarrassment
I've been on remicade for a year now and as of tonight I've had 2 teeth get holes by the gums. I had the first one removed and will be calling the dentist in the am to get this one pulled as well. Before remicade my teeth have been healthy and no issues. The holes go straight to the nerves as cold and heat cuz pain...
Yes, I have been on biological drugs for many years. 4 of the last 5 years has been Remicade. I had 4 teeth fall out last week right at gum line. No dental insurance! Will medicare pay?
Yes, my teeth are decaying at gum line. Had to get several crowns since I've been on this med. My dentist states it's the remicade that's causing this. I'm off now but is on Imuran now. Waiting on 2 more crowns now. The talk was to remove all my teeth but I'm totally disagreeing with this. I DO NOT want to
wear dentures, I'm too young (56). Lol. But loosing all of your teeth is no laughing matter. If I had known this, I would have said NO WAY to this treatment.
