Questions About Treatment

Hi, my name is Maya, I went for a checkup with a new dentist. The x-rays showed there was an infection in my lower left jaw under 18 and 19 (#17 is gone), she said that the infection was making the bone in that area look like Swiss cheese. 18 and 19 are in bad shape, on 18 a large filing crumbled a couple of years back and had lots of decay. 19 was destroyed by a dental student who was supposed to do a pulpotomy but did a pulpectomy instead. My new dentist said they need to be extracted as well as 3 other molars in other locations, first she was going to do the extractions, then she referred me to an oral surgeon, then during another visit for a filling on a different tooth she said she had extra time and suggested we extract 18, something didn't feel right so I refused. All this back and forth as well as other occurrences caused me some doubt and raised sone questions. One question is: if there was a significant infection present eating away at healthy bone tissue shouldn't she have prescribed antibiotics right away? Also, she filled a cavity on 21 and a month later it had a void so she redid it. Is it normal to have a void that soon after a filling or was it improperly done? Lastly (for now) she just filled cavities on 4 and 5, the next time I flossed I could get the floss in ok but going down it got caught on an edge on either tooth now I can't even get the floss in. What do you make of that? Should I find a new dentist?

Hello, Maya! How are you? I'm sorry about the dental problems that you're experiencing.

The void is something that just happens, sometimes, once a filling sets up and hardens. It just means that a small area of it pulled away from the edges, or sunk a little deeper than expected, so the slight empty space left needed filled back in.

But yes, I do question the information on the infection. I was found to have several severe lingering infections that I was unaware of, but they did no such bone damage. When I mentioned it to a dentist, having heard it from someone else, she told me she'd never even heard of such a thing. When I had dental surgery a few years ago, they weren't even worried about checking for that, in spite of the crazy infections I had.

Thus, I'd suggesting getting a second opinion or perhaps having a regular doctor check it out. I'm not a dentist, so I freely admit I could be wrong, I'm just speaking from my own experience.

Are there any other questions or concerns?
