Provera For Thick Endometrium
UpdatedHi, I am a 30 year old mother of two with a tubal ligation. I have been having horrible abdominal pain after intercourse and have always had really heavy heavy periods that are irregular and clotty and very painful. Had an ultrasound done. So they didn't find anything except that I had a very thick endometrium. Would a thick endometrium cause pain after intercourse? The pain lasts well into the next day. Sometimes I have pain when I haven't had intercourse as well. It is doubled over pain that lasts up to 24-48 hours (I have a high tolerance for pain and never go to the doctor). Anyway, the doctor prescribe me Provera to help them out my endometrium. I understand how it synthetic progestin can do this but what I don't understand is why the doctor told me I will never have a period while on it. It's 10 mg everyday indefinitely.. I've been taking it for about a week, & I have started my period. It is not crampy though but it's way more than spotting. I was wondering if anybody knew how often one would have a period while taking provera, if it is a good idea to take it for a long period of time just to make sure my endometrium stays thin? Confused..

Hello, Niki! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you've had.
I'm not sure why some doctors say that, because some women do still have periods, while taking it. It can vary from person to person.
In many cases, it tends to shorten your cycle, so you may experience periods as frequently as 14 to 21 days apart, there's no way to be sure, until you're on it for awhile to see how it affects you.
As to how long to take it, it does create some risks, such as those of certain types of cancers, as listed by the FDA, so you should only take it as long as your doctor instructs you to do so.
You may experience other side effects, as well, such as nausea, headache and PMS-like symptoms.
Is there anything else I can help with?
