UpdatedGoing to pain management for my back. The Doctor wrote a prescription for 3 times daily or prn, so when can I ask for a refill?

Mary C, Hydrocodone is a good pain med. And for many people it enables to move around and keep a quality of life. Personally, I think that the majority of older people,60+, do all they can to keep from going to stronger pain meds. Hydrocodone can help with that.
I'm very sorry about the swelling, Mary!
What I would suggest is having it checked out by your doctor, so they can let you know what's causing it. It may be related to the injuries and surgery, or it could be caused by fluid retention, or something entirely different.
Once you find out what's causing it, for sure, then it will be easier to answer your other questions.
And at this time, there are no plans to discontinue this medication. It has been further restricted, so its scheduling has been adjusted, but there are no plans to entirely remove it from the market.
Anything else I can help with?
Hello, Mary! How are you?
How many tablets was it written for? That would help determine the numbers of days, until it can be refilled.
The FDA classifies this medication as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Mary C, 1 Tablet 3 times a day for 90 tablets is a 30 days supply at least. If you only take it when needed and you don't take 3 tablets a day then the rx can last longer. If you got it filled on March 5, you would be due for a refill on April 4 becasue there are 31 days in March.
Mary C. Make a note of questions you have for your dr before your appointment. You may want to start writting the question when you leave your appointment if you forget to ask certain things and then as you think of other things you want to tell your dr or ask him make a note of it. By the time you have your next appointment, you should have thought of most if not everything you want to talk to him about.
Thank you good advice, I do have another question. Both of my feet swell after up and on them a couple hours every day, they really hurt. My right foot I had bunion surgery on and now have 3 posts in 3 toes. Not long after I fell and broke my left foot, not a real bad break. Now they are healed except what I describe prior. Will they ever feel normal with no swelling? I am disappointed with this going on and the back pain. How can I well up.? I want to be non dependant of pain med but I can't make it with out I have tried. Just how long will they continue to have the hydroco de? I panic each month thinking they will stop it. I just am tired of hurting and this gives some peace. Thank you for letting me express myself I want talk to any one about it cause people don't really want to hear it and I prefer my privacy.
Since my last post I had an appointment with my Ortho Doctor he said it may take up to a year or let more for for the swelling to subside, oh Lordy guess I am impatient. Thank you all once again for answers.
One more question ---some one who has arthritis do you know if they
can hydrocodone long term, reason being I have an older family member doing it for years she says it works keeps her able to go. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks again have a great day.
You may want to call back and ask to speak to the pharmacist. If you don't specifically ask to speak to a pharmacist, you are speaking to a clerk. Some places will go by the day it was filled instead of the number of days it was written for, especially when it says as needed.
Thank You. Happy Easter to you too.
I am sorry I should have been more accurate. The scrip was written as follows:
Hydrocodone acetaminophen 7.5-325 take 1 tablet by mouth 3 times a day as needed.
The count is 90. Filled3-5-2015.
Thank you for replying. Hope this helps me find an answer.
Well it really keeps this one moving I guess that is a good thing, just hoping I want have to go that way lol old age and pain really stink. Suppose to enjoy your latter days. Thanks for your thoughts have a blessed day and happy Easter.
Well so much for that refill date want refill till April 6th, what's up with that ?
Ok I will give it a try. I think it's because of the new ruling and classification of the medicine. Been reading up on it. Thanks again. Happy Easter.
I need to see a Dr. about my back pain and lower leg pain. I was taking Hydrocodone, but after 1 refill, my Dr. will no longer refill my prescription.
Re: Kurt (# 15)
Sorry for the late reply, Kurt. Before a doctor can prescribe narcotic pain meds long term, they would need proof you need it. This is usually from tests done and X-rays. Sometimes an MRI may be required. Some doctors will and some won't. If your doc won't, you may need to find one who will. More and more doctors are not. It's getting really difficult to find a doc who will prescribe pain meds long term now. Here it is anyway. And it's frustrating for those who truly need it. The problem stems from abuse, addiction, and people selling their meds. The DEA and the FDA have set new rules and guidelines for doctors in regard to prescribing controlled substances. It's gotten tough. I hope you're doing better by now.
Re: BL (# 9)
I agree, Hydrocodone is a good medication if you're fortunate enough to get a mfr. other than Mallincrodt. I am almost 60 and really don't want to be on anything stronger as I worry about addiction and withdraw.
Thank you for answering my question I appreciate it very much. Sometimes when I see the doctor questions go unanswered because after leaving the office a flood of questions seem to surface. I just happen to stumble on your site and wanted you to know how much I appreciate it, too. Have a blessed day.
