Prednisone 20mg Expired Prescription (2000)

I finally have an appointment with a R, Symbicort (2xs a day) heumatolgist on 8/21, my present doctor will not renew my prednisone because I have already had two sets of 3x3, 2x3, etc. I only need 8 pills. I do not understand. Two weeks ago I had a horrible experience. I had never experienced such pain and I could not move. It took me over an hour to get out of bed. I could not move without awful pain. I am taking Citalopram HBR (20mgs) for depression; Zolpidem Tartrate(5mgs) for insomnia, Lisinopril (20mgs 2 pils once a day) for my blood pressure, Symbicort for my COPD, Proair HFA as needed. The Prednisone (10mgs), and Hydrocodone 5-325, 2 pills ever 7 hours). I had an episode in 2000 with my RA and have been in remission since then. So, the question is, can I use this expired medication?

Hello, Suzanne! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in so much pain.

The reason they won't renew it is likely because of your blood pressure issue, coupled with the Proair and the Symbicort, because both of them can elevate your heart rate and blood pressure, thus it's risky to keep adding the steroid.

As to taking the old prescription, not it will have lost most of its efficacy by now and it would be best not to take it, without your doctor's approval, due to the issues I mentioned above.

The FDA lists the other typical side effects of Prednisone as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, weight gain, acne, fluid retention and insomnia.
