Prednisone is a steroid class medication that is used to treat inflammation, allergic reactions and immune disorders. In this case, my best guess would be that your doctor prescribed it to help with the inflammation in your sinuses from your illness.
It is very common to be given a high bolus to get the medication into your system and working as soon as possible.
The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne and weight gain.
