UpdatedHi my wife is taking. She had a trip to the hospital that resulted in this as well as several other RX. Am curious to know just how much potassium is this in English? And what is a normal daily intake of Potassium?
Thank you.

Hi Ed,
Sorry to hear about your wife having to go to the hospital. I hope she's doing a lot better as of the time you posted this thread.
Concerning the dosage of 20 mEq, this translates to 1500 mg (milligrams).
In terms of what amount someone is supposed to have each day, it may vary depending on several factors (i.e. things like: age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hypertension, renal disorders, etc)... However, for the average adult, colostate.edu recommends a dosage of 4,700 mg per day.
Hope this helps!
Are you sure about the recommendation of 4700 mg of potassium per day?? Sounds extreme. Please clarify. How would one go abut getting 4700 mg of potassium per day??
Colorado State University and the University of Florida both display charts recommending 4,700mg/day for teens and adults age 14+.

Dr. Oz also recommends the same dietary intake of potassium on his webpage as well. So it seems there are several reputable sources that back this up.
Here are some examples that may make reaching that number a little easier:
1 cup of dried apricots has around 1/3rd of your daily potassium intake
1 average-sized banana contains 450mgs of potassium
1 cup of lima beans contains 1000mgs
1 cup of lentils has around 731mgs
a baked potato has around 900mgs
1 avocado has around 975mgs
But there are really far too many foods for me to name that are high in potassium. You may need to run a few searches online in order to put together an adequate potassium-rich "grocery list".
Just looked at the Dr. Oz video. Thank you very much. You are correct on the 4700 mg per day. Very helpful.
